This suits divers who want the essentials close at hand without turning the evening into another logistical exercise. Couples have the beach, the garden and the sunset bar; families have family rooms and a child-friendly restaurant setup.

You are on Malapascua Island, in the Philippines, at Sitio Pasil Logon on the Bounty Beachfront. The beach is directly accessible from the resort, and Bounty Beach itself is only a few steps away. In other words, flip-flops are entirely adequate for the first outing of the day.

Logon Beach is about 500 feet away, while Bool Beach and Langub Beach are roughly 1.1 and 1.3 miles away. Guimbitayan Beach is about 1.1 miles away by the listed route. A few eating and drinking options sit nearby too, including Malapascua Exotic Bar & Restaurant at about 750 feet and Ging-Gings Restaurant & Flower Garden at about 300 feet.

Mactan-Cebu International Airport is 141 kilometres away, or about 88 miles. The island location makes the final approach part of the journey, so arranging the airport shuttle with the resort is sensible rather than leaving the arrival logistics until the last minute.

The room choice matters here because the categories do different jobs. For two people who want to open a suitcase without negotiating with the furniture, the Deluxe Family Room is the larger option. It is designed for two guests despite its name, so do not read “Family” as a promise of a full family occupancy setup.

Couples wanting the view should look at the Deluxe Suite with Sea View. The Suite and the sea-view version both bring a private bathroom, while the other categories are more straightforward rooms for two. Some options include a balcony, and the rooms come with air conditioning, a television, a desk or seating area, and a private bathroom with hot and cold water.

A refrigerator, minibar and electric kettle are useful details when you come back warm, thirsty and not especially interested in going straight back out. A hairdryer, towels, toiletries and daily housekeeping keep the room functional rather than fussy. Breakfast is included with the rooms, and Wi-Fi is available at no extra charge. Upper floors are reached by stairs only, worth keeping in mind if knees and dive bags no longer enjoy surprises.

Two restaurants give you more choice than the usual single resort menu. Exotic Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with international cooking that runs from European and Asian favourites to Filipino specialities. Salads, soups and seafood cover the lighter and more substantial ends of the post-dive appetite, and the restaurant operates throughout the day, every day.

Breakfast is included and comes in a notably broad range: continental, Italian, Full English or Irish, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, Asian, American and buffet options. That gives you room to keep things simple before an early start, or eat properly when the morning is not being dictated by a boat departure.

For something more specific, Osteria Pizzeria focuses on traditional Italian food and pizza. There is one named bar, One Up Bar, set on the beach. It serves signature cocktails, fresh fruit juices and draught beers including Heineken, Stella Artois, Hoegaarden and Paulaner, with happy hour from 2pm to 6pm. The resort also has a coffee house and snack bar, while its aquaponic garden supplies fresh herbs and vegetables for the kitchen.

When you are not in the water, the easiest plan is already on site: stretch out on a sun lounger, sit on the terrace or take the short walk down to the private beach area. The garden gives you another place to sit when you have had enough sand but are not ready for four walls.

The wellness facilities are more substantial than a token treatment room. You have a sauna and steam room, together with massage options covering the back, neck, head, hands, feet and full body. Wellness packages are also available, which is the sort of detail that can rescue an afternoon when your shoulders have started filing complaints.

Snorkelling is available for a change of pace, and boat excursions are part of the resort's activities. The surrounding beaches also give you somewhere to wander between meals, with Logon Beach close by and several other beaches within roughly a mile or so. The evening can remain as simple as a drink on the beach and dinner without needing another programme.

An airport shuttle is available on request for the journey from Mactan-Cebu International Airport, around 88 miles away. Share your expected arrival time with the resort in advance; this is particularly useful for an island arrival rather than a hotel beside a city taxi rank.

Check-in runs from 2pm to 11pm, and check-out is from 6am to 10am. You need photo identification and a credit card at check-in. Luggage storage and concierge assistance are available, as are room service, laundry and daily housekeeping.

Children of any age are welcome. Children aged 13 and over are charged as adults, while extra beds can be requested for children aged eight and above; availability depends on the accommodation selected. Pets are allowed on request. The upper floors are accessible by stairs only, so choose your room with that in mind if carrying luggage up steps is not your preferred warm-up.
