Aquarium, Havelock Island: A Shallow Reef Dive

Diving Aquarium offers a unique experience, a gently sloping reef system that creates a natural, sheltered basin. The site lives up to its name, presenting a consistently calm environment where you can spend your bottom time observing fish behaviour rather than fighting a current. Your descent starts in the shallows, typically around 3 to 5 metres, and gradually brings you along the contours of the reef.

As you move through the site, the depth ranges down to about 16 metres at its deepest point. This shallow profile means ample light penetrates the water column, illuminating the extensive coral gardens. You'll find yourself gliding over healthy hard and soft corals that host a wide variety of reef fish, creating a perpetually active underwater scene, much like a living exhibit.

The site is particularly known for its diverse resident fish population. Butterflyfish and wrasses are everywhere, along with damselfish weaving through the reef structure. Keep an eye out for five distinct species of clownfish, often found nestled within their anemone homes, an interaction you can watch for extended periods in these calm waters.

Beyond the common reef inhabitants, you'll encounter parrotfish grazing on the corals and angelfish gracefully navigating the formations. The protected circular reef structure at Aquarium provides a consistent habitat for these species, leading to predictable encounters and excellent opportunities for observation. It's a place where the marine life has settled and thrives without strong external influences.

The site also features impressive barrel sponges, some reaching considerable sizes, providing additional topography and shelter for smaller creatures. These sponges, along with anemones, contribute to the intricate ecosystem here. The clear water conditions allow for detailed macro observation and photography, letting you appreciate the smaller residents of the reef.
