Explorasub

Explorasub is situated on the port of Cargèse, positioned along the rugged western coastline of Corsica. This stretch of coast is defined by its rocky topography, featuring numerous underwater ridges and deep gulfs that create a diverse range of Mediterranean habitats.

Operating since June 2000, the centre serves as a professional hub for both local divers and those visiting the region. The location on the port allows for efficient logistics, as the dive boat is moored immediately adjacent to the centre's facilities.

The centre is affiliated with both FFESSM and SSI, providing a dual pathway for divers seeking traditional French certifications or international standards. The team consists of professional instructors dedicated to all levels of experience, from children aged 8 and up to seasoned divers.

Instruction covers a broad spectrum, including introductory programmes, recreational levels, and professional training such as the DEJEPS and Moniteur (MF1) qualifications. The centre also provides specialized training like the RIFAP.

Facilities are designed for comfort and accessibility, including a ventilated and shaded lounge area, changing cabins, and hot showers. The centre is also adapted for divers with reduced mobility.

The training catalogue is extensive, catering to both the FFESSM and SSI systems. Beginners can start with a Baptême, Pack initiation, or the SSI Scuba Diver course. For those progressing through the French system, the centre offers the full progression from Plongeur de Bronze through to Plongeur d'Or, including PE12, PE40, PE60, and the advanced PA20, PA40, and PA60 levels.

Advanced divers can pursue SSI certifications such as the Open Water Diver and Advanced Adventurer. Professional training is also available for those aiming for Guide de palanquée (Niveau 4), Moniteur (MF1), or the DEJEPS. Technical diving training is also offered on-site.

The centre operates the Charles IV, a Tempest 750 semi-rigid powered by a 300 CV Yamaha engine. This vessel has a capacity for 24 divers and is moored directly in front of the centre, which significantly reduces the manual handling of cylinders for the divers.

The boat is used for various trip types, including daily explorations and night dives. It provides access to approximately thirty different dive sites across the western coast of Corsica.

On-site, a Bauer compressor station provides cylinders in various volumes, including 6L, 10L, 12L, and 15L, all filled to 200 bar. For those requiring rental kit, the centre provides Mares equipment, including 5.5 mm and 7 mm wetsuits, 3 mm shorties, BCDs, regulators, and Mares Puck computers. Fins are also available as adjustable Avanti models.

After every use, all rental equipment is rinsed and disinfected. The centre's facilities include a shaded terrace for relaxation and a dedicated area for rinsing kit.

The underwater landscape is rich with Mediterranean life, particularly around the rocky ridges and deep gulfs. You will encounter various rockfish, including dentex, sars, and wrasses, alongside groupers and barracudas. Moray eels are also frequently seen patrolling the crevices.

The scenery is defined by vibrant fixed life, such as gorgonians, sea fans, and red coral. The rocky substrates are covered in various sponges, including multicoloured sponges, and calcareous algae.

For those interested in macro life, the area hosts a variety of nudibranchs and other small organisms. The presence of abundant plankton supports a healthy ecosystem for both large pelagics and smaller reef dwellers.

The western coast of Corsica is subject to regular marine currents. Divers should be prepared for moderate current conditions depending on the specific site and tidal flow.

The best period to dive in this region is between April and October, when conditions are most favourable for exploration.
