Tupitipitu, Bora Bora: outer reef wall and labyrinthine canyons

Tupitipitu is situated on the southern outer reef of Bora Bora, far from the sheltered waters of the main lagoon. This remote position makes it a signature dive site for the region, offering a completely different environment than the reef flats found closer to the island. You will approach this site by boat, typically a 40 to 60 minute transit to reach the south-east outer reef. Because of its exposure to the open ocean, it is an opportunistic site that depends entirely on favorable sea conditions and calm weather.

The site is a distinct pinnacle characterized by a shallow coral plateau that transitions abruptly into a very steep wall. Once you descend past the initial plateau, the bottom drops away so sharply that the seabed is no longer visible. This verticality is the defining feature of the site, creating a dramatic landscape for exploration. The topography is not a smooth slope but a complex labyrinth sculpted by currents and geological faults. You will find yourself navigating through a dense network of caves, canyons, and narrow corridors.

This labyrinthine structure provides an ideal habitat for a vast array of soft corals and sponges. You will encounter large gorgonians and various species of purple corals that thrive on the vertical surfaces. The walls are heavily encrusted with brightly colored sponges, creating a dense tapestry of texture and color. The complex arrangement of overhangs and crevices offers infinite points of interest for macro life and resident reef species alike.

As you move along the wall, keep an eye out for various reef residents. Large groupers and trevally are often found patrolling the edges of the canyons. You will see schools of fusiliers and butterflyfish moving through the water column, while parrotfish graze on the shallower sections of the plateau. Nudibranchs and other small invertebrates frequent the crevices, rewarding those who take the time to inspect the reef's intricate details.

The site is known for its high visibility, often reaching between 30 and 40 metres. This clarity is essential for navigating the deep canyons and for spotting the larger species that frequent the outer reef. The light filtering down through the clear water illuminates the purple corals and the intricate structures of the reef walls. This visibility, combined with the site's depth, creates a sense of vastness as you explore the underwater maze.

The presence of pelagic species adds a significant dimension to the dive. Depending on the time of year, you may encounter humpback whales passing through the area. The open ocean influence also attracts larger sharks, such as grey reef sharks and white-tip reef sharks. You might also observe nurse sharks or eagle rays cruising along the reef edge. These encounters are a hallmark of the site's status as an outer-reef ecosystem.

The site's location on the exposed southern reef means that conditions can change quickly. Depending on the wind, swell, and tide, the current can shift from light to strong. This variability is a primary reason why the site is not offered as a standard dive. It requires careful planning and an assessment of the ocean swell before the boat departs from the dive center. Experienced divers will find the site's unpredictable nature a core part of the experience.
