Te Mara Nui

Te Mara Nui is situated in the heart of French Polynesia, serving the islands of Raiatea and Tahaa. The centre focuses on exploring the rich, preserved lagoon that defines this part of the archipelago, providing access to a variety of underwater environments.

You can choose from nine different dive sites, ranging from sheltered lagoon areas to the more dynamic waters of the Teavapiti pass. Beyond the water, the centre also facilitates cultural excursions to local distilleries, pearl farms, and vanilla plantations on the islands.

The centre operates seven days a week throughout the year. Instruction is provided for a full spectrum of abilities, from introductory dives to advanced certifications.

Shore-based facilities include amenities to support your diving day, including rinsing areas and changing facilities.

The lagoon is home to a wide variety of reef fish and larger pelagics. You will frequently encounter Napoleon wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus), various groupers, and barracuda. Larger species such as Tuna (Thunnus), Jack (Carangidae), and Mackerel (Scombridae) are also part of the local ecosystem.

During your dives, look out for various species of sharks, including Whitetip reef shark (Triaenodon obesus), Blacktip reef shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus), and Grey reef shark (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos). You may also spot Manta ray (Mobula alfredi) or Hammerhead sharks (Sphyrnidae) patrolling the area.

The reef is also populated by many smaller, colourful inhabitants. This includes various species of Angelfish (Pomacanthidae), Surgeonfish (Acanthuridae), and Parrotfishes (Scaridae). You might also see Batfish (Platax), Unicornfish, and Emperor fish.

For those interested in macro life, the area supports a variety of smaller organisms, including Nudibranch (Chromodoris willani), Shrimp (Caridea), and Stonefish (Synanceia). The seabed and reef structures are further enriched by encrusting sponges, black corals, and spiny oysters.
