Soekarno-Hatta International Airport CGK

Jakarta is where you change for Manado, Sorong and Ambon in other words, much of Indonesian diving beyond Bali. There is a catch: an onward domestic flight means entering Indonesia, visa included.

How long is your layover?

2 hrs

Three terminals are connected, but changing terminal means another security check.

  • The three terminals are linked by Sky Train and shuttle buses, including a free shuttle. It is not a walk: allow for the journey and the wait.
  • ⚠️ The airport publishes no minimum connection time. Figures in circulation around ninety minutes for international-to-international and two hours once a domestic flight is involved come from secondary sources, not the airport operator.
  • Every terminal change means passing through security again.

2–5 hrs

There is free comfort, but not much of it and it is poorly signposted.

  • Airport Wi-Fi is free. The airport also includes a relaxation area and reading corner among its services.
  • Left-luggage facilities operate continuously on the arrivals side in Terminals 2 and 3. Treat them as chargeable.
  • ⚠️ Showers appear on the services list, but no free public shower outside a lounge is confirmed. Do not build your layover around one.

5–10 hrs

Going out requires a visa and so does an onward domestic connection.

  • NO VISA as long as you remain in the international transit area, no formalities are required.
  • VISA REQUIRED once you leave that area, including to board a DOMESTIC flight, you enter Indonesia. European passport holders are not exempt: you need a visitor visa, obtained online in advance or on arrival.
  • Apply online before you leave. The visa-on-arrival queue is at its least helpful when a domestic connection is waiting.
  • The airport runs no city tours, and Jakarta is large: going into town during a short layover makes little sense.

10 hrs +

Sleep nearby; the free shuttle does the useful bit.

  • VISA REQUIRED several nearby hotels run a free continuous shuttle from the airport. This is the simplest option for a full night.
  • ⚠️ Do not rely on the airside hotel in Terminal 2 without confirming it with the airport first. If your passport makes entry to Indonesia awkward, do not book on that basis alone.
  • No airline-funded overnight programme is documented here: you pay for the night yourself.

What catches travellers out

Indonesia does not waive visas for European travellers

As in Bali, and unlike Malaysia, Thailand or Singapore, you need a visitor visa to enter including for a domestic connection. This is the point that costs you most here, in both money and time.

No minimum connection time is published

The airport gives none. Any figures you find come from third parties: they bind nobody, least of all an airline that refuses boarding.

The ‘hotel in the terminal’ is not a plan to rely on

Several guides mention an airside hotel in Terminal 2. Confirm it with the airport before you make it your overnight plan not when you arrive.

Why not wait it out in peace?

You can buy single entry to Saphire without a card or airline status, and it is the safest place to get a shower before the island flight.

Clear up the first misconception: this is not a business-class-only lounge. You can buy entry whatever airline you are flying and whatever cabin is printed on the ticket.

The airport includes showers among its services, but there is no confirmed free public shower outside a lounge. If arriving clean on the island matters to you, do not gamble on it.

⚠️ Lounges operate in several terminals, and terminals are connected only by shuttle or Sky Train. Use the lounge in your DEPARTURE terminal.

Garuda lounges and those run by other airlines are not sold as single entries: access comes with your cabin class or status.

Expect the equivalent of an airport sit-down meal for a few quiet hours.

Where to sleep during the layover?

VISA REQUIREDFM7 Resort Hotel Jakarta Airport

Free continuous airport shuttle: the simplest address for a layover.

  • The shuttle runs day and night, which matters when your domestic flight leaves at dawn.
  • Like every hotel here, it requires entering Indonesia and therefore a visa, even for one night.

A step up in comfort, within the same area.

  • Choose this when your layover warrants a proper night rather than a few hours.
  • Check the transport when booking: in Jakarta, a short journey can become a long one depending on the hour.

The diver’s reflex

Your flight to Manado, Sorong or Ambon takes you into Indonesia

Eastern Indonesian diving Bunaken, Raja Ampat and the Banda Sea is reached by a DOMESTIC flight from Jakarta. That flight departs from a different area from your international arrival, so you clear immigration, collect your dive bag and need a visa. Apply online before departure: it is the only way to stop the visa desk queue eating your connection.

Put the Sky Train in your margin, not your optimism

You cannot walk between the three terminals. Between the train or shuttle, the wait, checking your dive bag again and another security check, a connection advertised at ninety minutes leaves nothing in hand. The airport publishes no official minimum to fall back on if you miss the next flight.

Your spare batteries stay in the cabin, without exception

Torches, strobes and housings: every battery carried outside its device counts as a spare battery and travels in the cabin, with terminals protected. Permitted up to 100 Wh, subject to airline approval between 100 and 160 Wh, and refused above that. A bag with a battery that cannot be removed and exceeds the threshold is simply prohibited check yours before check-in.
