Bali is more than a destination: it is the route onwards to Komodo, Bunaken and Raja Ampat. It is also the only one of these hubs where even a few hours outside can mean paying for a visa.

How long is your layover?
2 hrs
Five minutes on foot between terminals and immigration between them.
- The international and domestic terminals are linked by a covered corridor with moving walkways: five to ten minutes on foot, with no shuttle to wait for.
- ⚠️ The walk is not what takes the time; the formalities are. Going from international to domestic means immigration, baggage reclaim, customs, then check-in and security again. Allow at least two hours, and three in the other direction.
- If both flights are on the same ticket and your bags are tagged through, transfer desks let you remain airside without immigration. You still go through security again after the desk.
2–5 hrs
The terminal is pleasant enough. Just as well, as it offers little else.
- Airport Wi-Fi is free in both terminals.
- The international departures area has gardens and decorative spaces, freely accessible once you have cleared security.
- ⚠️ There are no free showers and no airside left-luggage facility. A long wait at the gate means keeping all your cabin baggage with you, unless you use the lounge.
5–10 hrs
Going out costs you here, and not only in time.
- NO VISA if you remain airside, your bags are transferred and you use the transfer desks, no formalities are required. You cannot leave the airport.
- ⚠️ VISA REQUIRED this differs from the other Asian hubs: Indonesia does not waive visas for European passport holders. Entering, even for half a day, requires a visa on arrival or an electronic visa arranged beforehand, plus Bali tourist tax. There is no lighter transit arrangement.
- Apply online before you leave rather than at the desk: that queue is the airport's longest, and it arrives at precisely the wrong moment on a short layover.
- The airport runs no city tour. Anything offered under that name is paid private assistance or chauffeur transport.
10 hrs +
You sleep landside: there is no airside hotel here.
- ⚠️ Denpasar has no hotel in the secure area. Any overnight stay means passing immigration, with the visa and tax that follow.
- VISA REQUIRED Tuban, immediately north of the airport, has the layover hotels within five or ten minutes. Several provide a shuttle for guests.
- ⚠️ Do not expect a free overnight stay: Denpasar is not a hub for any particular airline and has no layover accommodation scheme. Any arrangement is down to the airline when it is responsible for a delay.

What catches travellers out
Indonesia does not waive visas for European travellers
This is the airport's most expensive trap, and it catches people because Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Hong Kong admit them without a visa. Here you need a visa on arrival or an electronic visa, plus Bali tourist tax including for a connection that merely takes you between terminals.
Five minutes walking, two hours of formalities
The covered link between the terminals is short, which makes the transfer look like a formality. Immigration, baggage reclaim, customs and check-in take the time at least two hours, and three from domestic to international.
No airside hotel or left-luggage facility
A long wait at the gate means keeping all your cabin baggage with you and having nowhere to wash. At an airport this busy, you might assume otherwise. You would be wrong.
Why not wait it out in peace?

You can buy access to the Concordia individually, with no card or status required. It is also the airport's only place for a shower.
Clear up the usual misunderstanding first: this is not a business-class-only lounge. You can buy entry whatever airline or cabin you are travelling in.
There are no free showers at Denpasar. Between an overnight long-haul flight and a morning domestic flight to Komodo or Sorong, this is the only place to arrive washed.
There are two Concordia Lounges: one in the international terminal and one in the domestic terminal. Use the one in your DEPARTURE terminal: they do not connect airside, and moving between them means immigration.
For you, the useful bit is rather less glamorous: your own socket for torches and camera housings, plus somewhere to put the cabin bag before boarding a smaller aircraft.

The most convenient address a few minutes landside from the terminal.
- Allow five to ten minutes: it is the straightforward choice when your domestic flight leaves early the following morning.
- ⚠️ Like every hotel here, it means entering Indonesia visa and tourist tax included, even for a single night.

- Tuban has several more hotels at a similar distance from the terminal.
- Check the shuttle when booking: it is not automatic, and negotiating a night taxi with dive kit is rarely a pleasure.

The diver’s reflex
Your connection to Komodo or Raja Ampat takes you into Indonesia
Labuan Bajo, Sorong and Manado are DOMESTIC flights. You pass immigration, collect the dive bag, clear customs, check it in again and clear security and you need a visa for all of it. This is not a two-hour connection: allow three, and arrange your visa online before you travel.
The aircraft east across Indonesia is smaller, and so is the baggage allowance
The long-haul flight accepting your 25 kg does not commit the flight taking you to Komodo or Papua. These routes use smaller aircraft, with lower allowances, often on a separate ticket. Your bag goes back on the scales at the desk. Buy additional baggage online before travelling; the Denpasar counter has no reason to do you a favour.
Charge here, not on the boat
Denpasar is the last genuinely reliable point before Labuan Bajo, Sorong or Bunaken. On a liveaboard, power is rationed and sockets are shared; in a dive village, it can be switched off overnight. A long layover is the time to top up torches, camera housings and batteries the lounge has a socket by every chair, the terminal rather less so.
