Sam Ratulangi International Airport MDC

One terminal for every flight, which simplifies life no end but Indonesia has tightened its visa rules, and a UK passport now needs a Visitor Visa to step out at Manado, exemption or no exemption.

How long is your layover?

2 hrs

One building solves most problems unless your bags aren't checked all the way through.

  • It's a single terminal, domestic and international zones under the same roof, arrivals on the ground floor, departures upstairs everything on foot.
  • On one ticket with bags checked end to end, an international-to-domestic transfer (or the reverse) is done WITHOUT leaving the terminal follow the 'Transit/Transfer' signs.
  • ⚠️ If that's not your situation separate tickets, bags not checked through you'll have to exit to the public area, collect your kit, then re-check in and clear security again. A local guide suggests at least 3 hours in that case, largely because of frequent weather delays.

2–5 hrs

The terminal gives you the basics Wi-Fi and seats and stops there.

  • Free Wi-Fi throughout, network '@Sam_Ratulangi_Airport', straightforward browser sign-in.
  • Standard seating in the departure hall, open access no dedicated rest area is documented.
  • ⚠️ No free shower confirmed anywhere, public side or airside Concordia Lounge is the only one, and it's a paid entry.
  • Restaurants, cafés (KFC, Starbucks, Dunkin', Coffee Bean) and duty free in the departure zone, all paid, open to any passenger past security.

5–10 hrs

Sort the paperwork BEFORE you board Indonesia no longer waves a UK passport through without one.

  • VISA REQUIRED France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and Portugal have dropped off Indonesia's visa exemption list, now limited to some twenty countries, mostly in Southeast Asia. A Visitor Visa (e-VOA, applied for online in advance, or VOA on arrival) is required, valid for 90 days for a 30-day stay passport valid at least 6 months and an onward ticket both needed.
  • The same Visitor Visa covers a trip into town during a layover no separate transit visa is documented for Manado.
  • ⚠️ No official city tour is run by the airport or by any airline. Trips out to Bunaken go through agencies in town, and you book them yourself.

10 hrs +

You sleep 950 metres from the terminal but landside all the same, visa in hand.

  • VISA REQUIRED RedDoorz near Sam Ratulangi Airport sits under a kilometre from the terminal, the closest documented option.
  • Novotel Manado Golf Resort & Convention Centre, some fifteen minutes away, buys you a decent step up in comfort if the layover's worth a proper night.
  • ⚠️ No airside hotel exists at Manado: both options mean clearing immigration, e-VOA included.
  • Don't count on the airline putting you up: no layover accommodation policy is documented for Sam Ratulangi.

What catches travellers out

Indonesia is no longer visa-free for you

This is the costliest trap at Manado: plenty of European travellers still set off assuming visa-free entry, which was true a few years back. It isn't any more check the current rules before booking a flight that depends on an easy exit.

'Domestic terminal' and 'international terminal' are just zones

The signage still talks about two separate terminals, but it's one building over several floors don't go looking for a shuttle between two separate structures.

No free shower anywhere

Getting clean at Sam Ratulangi means paying for entry to Concordia Lounge plan for it after a long flight and before a quick trip back in the water.

Concordia Lounge sells single entry, no card or status required and it's also the only reliable place in the building to have a shower.

Sitting on the domestic departures side, past security (escalator then lift to the 3rd floor), it can be booked online or paid for at the door, card or no card.

No free shower is documented anywhere at Sam Ratulangi, public side or airside the lounge is the only confirmed option.

Garuda's lounges (GA Lounge / Bunaken Lounge) exist too, but they're for business/first passengers and top-tier programme status only no single-entry purchase there.

Reckon on the price of a sit-down airport meal for three quiet hours, with food available inside.

The diver’s reflex

Sort the Visitor Visa before you board, not at Manado

Unlike Thailand or the Philippines, Indonesia no longer waves most European passports through without a visa. To get out to Bunaken or Lembeh during a layover, you'll need a valid e-VOA the online application takes a few minutes, but it has to be done BEFORE the flight, not at the counter.

Torch batteries and camera housings: check the airline, not the airport

Sam Ratulangi publishes no lithium battery rules of its own you're working to whichever standard your carrier applies (Lion Air, Wings Air, Garuda, Batik), built on Indonesian and general IATA rules. Check your airline's exact policy before you fly, particularly on a domestic leg into a smaller airport.

No baggage storage documented

If you want to offload the dive bag between flights, there's no known left-luggage service at Manado your most reliable bet is dropping it at the hotel next door (RedDoorz, 950 m away) rather than relying on the airport.
