The Cenote Guy - Cenote Diving

The Cenote Guy focuses exclusively on the unique underwater landscapes of the Riviera Maya, specialising in cavern and cave diving. They operate primarily out of Playa del Carmen, providing access to some of the most iconic freshwater and halocline systems in Mexico.

Rather than offering generic tourist packages, the centre focuses on a personalised approach. You can tailor your diving programme based on your specific aspirations, your budget, and the duration of your stay, ensuring that the sites you visit match your certification level and interests.

The team is composed of experienced cenote guides who prioritise safety and thorough briefings. They operate with a maximum ratio of four divers per guide, ensuring close supervision and a high level of attention to detail during every excursion.

Instruction is available in English, Spanish, and French. This multilingual support is particularly useful when navigating the technical nuances of cave environments or during formal training sessions.

The centre provides training for all levels of experience. You can begin your journey with Open Water Diver training or progress through the Advanced Open Water Diver course.

For those looking to move into technical territory, they offer Full Cave Diving certification. This allows you to move beyond the light zone and explore the more complex systems of the Yucatan peninsula.

Full equipment hire is available on-site for those not travelling with their own kit. This includes everything required for a complete dive setup.

Nitrox is available upon request for certified divers. For those planning multi-dive days, the centre provides transportation in clean, air-conditioned vehicles from pickup points in Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

The cenotes are home to several freshwater and brackish water species. You may encounter Mayan Gobies, Cyclids, and various species of turtles during your dives.

In the more open sections and sinkholes, you will find schools of fish and larger inhabitants such as turtles. In some systems, you might even see bats near the air domes or cave entrances.

In the surrounding marine environments, the biodiversity increases significantly. You can find various reef fish, including parrotfish (Calotomus), surgeonfish (Acanthuridae), and snapper (Lutjanus). Larger pelagics such as stingrays, rays (Batoidea), and occasionally sharks may be present in the deeper or more open areas.

Diving in the cenotes involves navigating various layers of water density. You will frequently encounter haloclines, where freshwater and saltwater meet, creating distinct visual layers. Some sites, such as Angelita, feature hydrogen sulfide clouds that can significantly affect visibility and create a unique, opaque environment.
