Alma Libre Dive Center

Alma Libre Dive Cozumel is an SSI-affiliated centre located within the Buccanos Beach Club on the North Hotel Zone of Cozumel. The centre operates primarily through boat excursions, providing access to the diverse marine ecosystems of the Cozumel Reef National Park.

From the club facilities, you can prepare for daily trips, though the centre also operates out of the local Cozumel marinas for boat departures. This dual presence ensures access to a wide variety of drift dives, walls, and reef structures that define the island's reputation.

The team is composed of certified instructors dedicated to the SSI educational methodology. They cover the entire spectrum of diver development, from those taking their first breaths underwater to professionals working towards their Instructor rating.

Instruction is tailored to all levels, ensuring that both beginners and experienced divers receive the specific guidance required for their environment. The staff focuses on sharing marine ecology and identification skills to enhance the educational value of every dive.

The course catalogue follows the SSI curriculum, ranging from initial encounters to professional certifications. Beginners can start with Try Scuba or the Basic Diver course, leading into the Open Water Diver qualification.

For those looking to expand their skills, the centre offers the Advanced Adventurer, Coral Identification, Fish Identification, and Marine Ecology courses. Professional training is also a core component, with pathways available for Divemaster, Assistant Instructor, Instructor Training Course, and Open Water Instructor.

For those travelling in larger groups, private boat charters are available with a capacity for up to 14 people. These outings allow for a more bespoke experience tailored to your group's specific dive objectives.

While the centre operates from the Buccanos Beach Club, boat departures also take place from the marinas in Cozumel to reach the various dive sites across the park.

The centre provides a full range of rental equipment for divers who do not wish to carry their own kit. This includes regulators, BCDs, and wetsuits to suit the local conditions.

On-site, the team also offers photography and video services to document your dives, though these are provided as a complementary service and are not guaranteed.

The reefs are home to a vast array of tropical reef fish and large pelagics. You can expect to see schools of Jack (Carangidae), snapper (Lutjanus), and various species of grouper (Epinephelus), alongside barracuda schools and reef jacks. Larger visitors include eagle rays (Aetobatus), spotted eagle rays, and various shark species such as the Blacktip reef shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus), Caribbean reef sharks, and occasionally hammerhead sharks.

Sea turtles are a constant presence in these waters, with Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), and Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) frequently sighted. You may also encounter Southern stingray (Hypanus americanus) and various species of rays on the sandy bottom.

For those interested in macro life, the crevices and reef structures host a wealth of smaller organisms. Look for the splendid toadfish, various octopus (Octopus vulgaris), and different species of moray eel (Muraenidae), including the green moray (Gymnothorax funebris). Seahorses (Hippocampus kuda), nudibranchs (Chromodoris willani), and various species of shrimp and crabs can be found throughout the reef.

The hard structures of the reef are built from extensive brain corals, hard corals, and barrel sponges, interspersed with sea fans (Gorgoniidae), sea rods, and deep-water gorgonians. These provide the essential habitat for the incredible biodiversity of the Cozumel marine park.

Diving in Cozumel is subject to the local weather patterns, with the hurricane season running from June to October; the summer months are typically the most active. The water can become windy and agitated, particularly during the winter months, which may affect boat conditions.

If the port is closed due to weather, the centre provides a full refund or the option to reschedule. However, if the port remains open but a diver chooses to cancel due to weather, no refund is issued.
