Doctor Dive

Doctor Dive has been operating in the Costa Maya and Mahahual region for over a decade. The centre is positioned to take advantage of the favourable maritime conditions that allow for safe, year-round diving in the Mexican Caribbean.

Whether you are looking for a relaxed reef dive near the coast or a demanding expedition to a remote atoll, the centre provides the technical support and local knowledge required. Their operations cover a wide range of environments, from shallow lagoons to deep coral mountains and underwater arches.

The centre is affiliated with both PADI and SSI, ensuring a broad range of certification standards for all divers. The team is composed of qualified, experienced instructors capable of handling both entry-level students and advanced divers looking for technical challenges.

Safety and attention to detail are central to their operation, with a strict limit of six divers per guide. This small ratio is particularly beneficial during night dives or when navigating more complex sites like the caverns of Uvero.

A comprehensive curriculum is available through PADI and SSI, ranging from the initial Discover Scuba Diving and Scuba Diver courses to the full Open Water Diver certification. For those looking to progress, the centre offers Advanced Open Water Diver, Deep Diver, and various specialty courses.

Professional training is also a core part of the programme, with pathways available for Dive Guide and Divemaster levels. The technical side of diving is well-represented with courses in Nitrox (32% and 40%), Decompression Diving, Sidemount, and even specialised training in Navigation, Search and Recovery, and Buoyancy Control.

The centre provides a full range of rental equipment for those not travelling with their own kit. For those requiring specific items, dive computers are available for hire.

Nitrox is available for use, with fills provided in 80 cubic foot (12 litre) aluminium cylinders. For those looking to enhance their underwater experience, photographic and video services are available to document your dives or expeditions.

The reefs are defined by a vibrant ecosystem of hard corals, sponges, and sea anemones (Actiniaria). You will find a high density of tropical fish, including various species of Jack (Carangidae) and many different types of crustaceans.

In the more open areas and deeper walls, larger species make appearances. It is common to encounter Nurse shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum), sea turtles, and occasionally Eagle ray (Aetobatus). The protected nature of the surrounding reserves also provides a habitat for manatees and dolphins (Delphinidae).

Macro life and smaller inhabitants are abundant throughout the coral gardens. Keep an eye out for Spiny lobster (Palinuridae), moray eels (Muraenidae), and various mollusks tucked into the reef structure, alongside seahorses and garden eels (Gorgasia).

Diving in the region is possible year-round due to favourable maritime conditions. However, certain sites require specific swell considerations; for example, a swell of less than 1.4 metres is preferred for diving at Chinchorro and Uvero.

Night diving is a regular part of the centre's programme, and conditions are best when the swell remains below 1.1 metres. Divers can also experience the bioluminescence of plankton in total darkness.
