Scuba Tulum

Scuba Tulum has been a fixture of the Quintana Roo diving scene since 2008. Based in the Tulum area, the centre provides access to the diverse underwater landscapes of the Riviera Maya, from the intricate freshwater cave systems to the coastal reef flats.

What sets this operation apart is a departure from standardised, high-volume tourism. Instead, the focus is on local planning, where dive itineraries are adapted to the specific water conditions, your comfort level, and your personal diving objectives.

Scuba Tulum provides a full spectrum of SSI training, catering to everyone from those taking their first breath underwater to professionals. The course catalogue includes Basic Diver, Scuba Diver, Open Water Diver, and Advanced Open Water Diver.

For those looking to advance their technical or professional skills, the centre offers Stress & Rescue, Divemaster, Assistant Instructor, and Open Water Instructor programmes. The training is designed to build buoyancy and safety skills, which are essential for the local cave environments.

The centre offers a complete range of rental kit for those not travelling with their own equipment. This includes regulators, BCDs, and fins, as well as wetsuits for more temperate conditions.

For night diving enthusiasts, torches are available to help navigate the darker sections of the cenotes or the reef at night.

The cenote systems and reefs host a variety of specialised life. You will encounter cave-adapted crustaceans and various small fish navigating the freshwater passages. In the more open reef areas, look for snapper schools, juvenile reef fish, and various tropical fish.

On the reefs and near the coast, you can find larger species including Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), Southern stingray (Hypanus americanus), and various species of Ray (Batoidea). Moray eel (Muraenidae) and Nurse shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum) are also common residents of the rocky ledges.

Macro life is present throughout the area, with various Crab (Brachyura) and freshwater crabs found in the cenote environments. Keep a close eye on the crevices for Lobster (Homaridae) and different species of eel (Anguilliformes).

During specific periods, the area becomes a significant location for larger pelagics, most notably the seasonal presence of the bull shark.

The diving environment in Tulum varies significantly between the protected, still waters of the cenotes and the more open reef systems. While the cenotes offer very calm conditions, the coastal dives may be subject to more movement depending on the season.
