The Mayan Cave

The Mayan Cave is situated in Tulum, Mexico, a location that puts you at the heart of one of the world's most unique diving environments. This area is defined by its complex network of flooded cave systems and crystal-clear cenotes, offering a completely different experience to traditional ocean diving.

The local aquatic life is diverse, ranging from large pelagics to delicate cave-adapted crustaceans. In the surrounding waters, you can encounter Green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas), Southern stingrays (Hypanus americanus), and various species of snapper schools. Barracuda (Sphyraena) and Tarpon (Megalops) are also known to move through the area.

Near the reef and sandy bottom, look for Moray eel (Muraenidae), including the Green moray (Gymnothorax funebris), alongside Parrotfish (Calotomus), Surgeonfish (Acanthuridae), and various Angelfish (Pomacanthidae). You may also spot Lobster (Homaridae) and different types of Crab (Brachyura) amongst the structures.

The ecosystem supports a wide array of smaller inhabitants, including juvenile reef fish, small fish, and various tropical fish. In the freshwater environments, freshwater crabs can be found, adding to the specific biodiversity of the cenote systems.
