East Cape Explorers is a PADI 5 Star dive centre situated at La Playa in San José del Cabo, Mexico. They have built a reputation for authentic oceanic adventures, particularly for those seeking to dive the nutrient-rich waters of the Gordo Banks.

The centre operates with a focus on small groups, ensuring that whether you are on a local reef dive or a deep-water pelagic excursion, the experience remains personalised. They also facilitate unique seasonal encounters, including whale shark safaris and whale watching tours.

The team is composed of expert guides and professional instructors, with a significant emphasis on high-level training. They offer a comprehensive range of professional pathways, from Divemaster internships to the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC).

For those pursuing a professional career, the centre features a dedicated 'Klubhaus'. This facility serves as a professional training hub and includes a classroom, a deep pool, a fully equipped kitchen, and laundry facilities. Accommodation is available on-site for professional students, including complimentary stays for those undertaking the IDC.

The centre provides a complete spectrum of PADI training, starting from the Open Water Diver course through to advanced specialties. You can enrol in courses such as the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver, and various specialty programmes including Deep Diver, Wreck Diver, and Underwater Navigation.

For professional divers, the training is extensive. They offer the Divemaster Fast Track and Internship, as well as the full Instructor Development Course (IDC) and Staff Instructor courses. They also provide specialised instructor training in Enriched Air Nitrox, Navigation, Deep, Emergency Oxygen, and Search and Recovery.

The centre utilises Super-Panga vessels for their excursions. These boats are used to reach both the local reef sites and the more remote offshore locations like the Gordo Banks.

On board, you will find water and snacks provided for the duration of the trip. For those interested in marine mammal observation, the boats are equipped with a hydrophone to assist in listening to whale vocalisations.

Full equipment hire is available on-site, covering all the essentials including wetsuits, masks, fins, and regulators. If you prefer to use your own kit, the centre provides the necessary facilities for preparation.

Nitrox is available for divers looking to extend their bottom time. For those requiring larger gas volumes, 100cf cylinders can be provided.

The local reefs are vibrant habitats home to a wide variety of species. You will regularly encounter sea turtles, groupers (Epinephelus), and various tropical reef fish, alongside colourful corals and gorgonians. Schools of snappers, jacks (Carangidae), and grunts are common, as are rays (Batoidea) and whitetip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus).

Macro life enthusiasts can find plenty to observe in the crevices of the reef. Look out for nudibranchs (Chromodoris willani), seahorses (Hippocampus kuda), frogfish (Antennarius), and scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae). Octopuses, moray eels (Muraenidae), and various species of lobster (Homaridae) also inhabit these waters.

Seasonal visitors define the diving calendar in this region. From December to April, you can observe humpback whales and gray whales. Whale shark safaris are available from October to May, while mobula rays are frequently seen between May and July.

Conditions vary significantly depending on the site. Local reef sites generally experience gentle currents, making them suitable for most certification levels. However, offshore sites like the Outer Gordo Banks are subject to strong currents and open blue water conditions.

The seasonal timing of your dive will impact your encounters, with specific windows for seeing large pelagics such as hammerhead sharks and silky sharks.
