Solitude Lembeh Resort is a 17-room and villa resort for divers, underwater photographers and anyone who prefers a small property to a large hotel machine. The mood is quiet and practical rather than showy. You can move from your room to the garden, the infinity pool, the restaurant or the spa without turning the evening into another expedition. Children are not allowed, so the atmosphere is geared towards adult stays. That makes the resort particularly easy to picture for a couple travelling to dive, photograph and then eat properly before doing very little for the rest of the evening.

You stay in Airtembaga, Indonesia, on the seafront of the Lembeh Strait in North Sulawesi. The resort sits among gardens, jungle and reef, with views towards the strait rather than a town-centre backdrop. This is the Lembeh setting in practical terms: water in front of you, greenery around you and a fairly definite reason for bringing a camera.

Pantai Kasawari is 1.1 miles away, while the nearest listed restaurant, Rm. Verrel, is about 0.25 miles away. A few cafés and further restaurants are available around Bitung, roughly 4 to 5 miles away by road, so the on-site restaurant matters when you return hungry and would rather not organise another outing.

Sam Ratulangi Airport is 29 miles away by road, with a stated driving time of 58 minutes. The airport is in the Manado area, so the final approach is part of the journey rather than a quick hop from an urban hotel.

The accommodation is aimed at two adults, with three distinct ways to choose your view and your amount of elbow room. The Deluxe Double or Twin Room is the straightforward option for a couple who want air conditioning, a private bathroom and a super-king bed. It keeps things simple, without asking you to pay for space you will not use.

The garden-view villa gives you more room to spread out, while the sea-view villa is the one to consider if the outlook matters as much as the bed. Both villa categories have two bathrooms, which is useful when two divers are trying to shower, unpack and get ready at the same time. The larger sea-view option also gives you a more natural place to sit back and watch the strait rather than treating the room as a storage cupboard with a bed in it.

Air conditioning and a fan cover the hot, damp part of the day, while soundproofing is a welcome detail when sleep matters more than conversation. You also have a minibar, tea and coffee-making facilities, a wardrobe, a desk, seating, a balcony or terrace and a drying rack for clothes. There is no internet access, so plan around that before you arrive; for some divers, it is a nuisance, for others, an unexpectedly efficient way to stop checking the phone between dives.

Tembaga Restaurant & Bar is the resort's single named restaurant and bar, giving you one central place for meals, coffee and drinks. Its menu combines Indonesian flavours with international dishes, including European and Asian options, rather than forcing you to choose between local food and familiar plates every evening.

The useful distinction is in the ingredients. Locally grown herbs and spices go into the cooking, with homemade sambals alongside the dishes. The menu also covers halal, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free diets, so dietary requirements do not have to turn dinner into a negotiation conducted with hand signals.

Coffee is made on site, and the bar adds signature cocktails. Wine and champagne are available, while themed dinner nights and happy hour provide a little structure when you want something more than a quiet meal but less than a full night out. Breakfast, meal plans and room service are not part of the stated offering, so check the arrangement attached to your chosen stay.

The infinity-edge pool is the obvious place to put a non-diving afternoon. Add the sun terrace, loungers, umbrellas and outdoor seating, and you have the necessary equipment for the classic post-dive plan: shower, eat, swim briefly, then decide that moving again can wait. The surrounding gardens give you somewhere to sit when a pool is too much effort.

You can also use the shared lounge and board games when the weather, or your legs, argues against further adventure.
