Angol Point, Boracay: Reef Diving for Macro and Training

Angol Point is a shallow, sloping reef located just off Boracay's White Beach, easily accessible with a short boat ride. The site begins around 5 meters and gently slopes down to a maximum depth of 20 meters, making it a comfortable immersion for divers of all levels. The consistent, warm, clear waters and mild current allow for relaxed exploration, particularly suitable for those still building their underwater confidence or refining buoyancy skills.

The reef at Angol Point is characterised by a mix of hard and soft corals that form a varied landscape. As you descend, you'll find extensive patches of stony corals alongside leather corals and anemones, which host clownfish. This variety creates numerous hiding spots and micro-habitats, encouraging a diverse community of smaller reef inhabitants that are often overlooked in heavier current sites.

This site is a stronghold for marine invertebrates. You will consistently find feather stars with their symbiotic shrimp, various sea stars, and sea cucumbers, often lying openly on the reef or tucked into crevices. Keep an eye out for nudibranchs, which are a highlight here, moving slowly across the coral and sand. For those focused on macro, the calm conditions and shallow depth provide ample bottom time to locate and observe these smaller creatures.

Angol Point also features a range of reef fish. Parrotfish and wrasse are common grazers, active across the coral heads. You'll encounter schools of damselfish, bannerfish, and sweetlips. Moray eels, including the distinct ribbon eels, are frequently seen peeking from their rocky hideaways. Lionfish are resident here, often suspended motionless near ledges, while scorpionfish blend in perfectly with the coral, requiring a keen eye to spot.

The sandy patches between the reef sections are productive grounds for octopuses and gobies, often found in symbiotic relationships with pistol shrimp. These areas also hold opportunities for finding less common species and offer a different perspective on the local marine life than the main coral gardens. The transition zones between sand and reef are always worth a closer look for camouflaged residents.

Night diving at Angol Point presents a different character of the reef. Many diurnal species retreat, making way for nocturnal hunters. You can encounter sleeping parrotfish in their mucous cocoons, and the site becomes a prime location to observe octopuses and cuttlefish as they emerge from their dens. Sea snakes are also regularly seen during night excursions, moving gracefully through the reef. The macro life, particularly nudibranchs, remains active and often more visible.
