Oslob, on the southern tip of Cebu, where whale sharks are fed every morning: a guaranteed encounter, but one we do not recommend.
Our advice: choose an encounter without feeding. In Oslob, whale sharks are hand-fed by fishermen every morning so that visitors can see them. Studies carried out on site show that this feeding changes their behaviour: they stay at the site about twice as long as normal, and nearly one in two carries propeller scars. We therefore advise you not to choose Oslob and to meet whale sharks where they live freely: in Donsol, in Sorsogon province, from November to June, or in Pintuyan, in Southern Leyte, where encounters take place without feeding.
Oslob, on the southern tip of Cebu, offers a dual-faceted diving experience, renowned for its distinctive whale shark encounters and rich reef systems. What began as an innocent interaction between local shrimp fishermen and these magnificent creatures has turned into daily feeding for tourists. Early in the morning, when fishermen would clean their catches offshore, the discarded remnants attracted whale sharks, until the fishermen began to hand-feed them small handfuls of shrimp. This historical interaction means that while whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) are migratory and documented across the Philippines, Oslob provides a remarkably consistent gathering.
You can expect to see typically six or seven individuals during an average encounter, offering ample opportunity to observe these massive filter feeders in their natural, if habituated, environment. The interaction feels intimate, allowing for close observation of their feeding behavior and immense scale. The encounters here are often in relatively shallow waters, allowing for extended observation of their feeding behaviors and graceful movements, making for an intimate and often profound experience.
Beyond the surface-level encounters, the deeper reef dives at Oslob offer an additional layer of exploration for divers. While the whale sharks understandably draw the most attention, the surrounding reef structures provide a rich, albeit different, underwater landscape. These reef sections hold their own appeal, presenting an opportunity to appreciate the broader marine biodiversity that thrives in the waters off southern Cebu.
These reef dives provide a contrast to the dynamic whale shark interactions, allowing for a more deliberate exploration of local coral formations and smaller marine life. You'll find yourself moving through diverse habitats, appreciating the intricate ecosystems that underpin the larger pelagic draws. It's a chance to settle into the rhythm of the reef and discover the often-overlooked residents living within the hard and soft coral gardens.
The local reef structure supports a healthy ecosystem, with patches of hard and soft corals forming a backdrop for your exploration. You can expect to find a variety of reef fish darting between coral heads, alongside opportunities to spot some of the smaller, more cryptic residents. The interaction between the topography and the resident species creates a dynamic underwater scene, complementing the primary attraction of the site.
Encounters are often in relatively shallow waters.
