Sangat House Reef, Palawan: Shore Diving in Coron Bay

Sangat House Reef sits directly in front of Sangat Island Dive Resort, within the Sangat Island Marine Park and Sanctuary. This fringing reef system begins almost immediately from the beach, allowing for shore entry and flexible dive profiles. You start your dive over a shallow reef flat, typically 1 to 2 metres deep, before the reef gradually slopes down, extending across seagrass and algae beds into vibrant coral gardens. This direct access means you can spend more time underwater exploring without the need for boat travel.

The initial swim from the beach covers about 100 metres over seagrass and algae, bringing you to the main coral structures. As you descend, you'll find a mix of hard and soft corals forming a complex habitat that provides shelter for a variety of smaller reef inhabitants. The structure is well-developed, offering plenty of nooks and crannies to explore from the start of your dive, ensuring there's always something to observe as you follow the reef's contours.

Moving along the reef, you'll encounter a diverse array of tropical fish species integrated into the coral architecture. Parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, and damselfish are common sights, moving between the branches and crevices. Wrasse, groupers, and snappers also frequent the reef. You can expect to find clownfish (Amphiprioninae) within their host anemones, a consistent and engaging sight throughout the dive.

The reef's topography supports a healthy ecosystem, with lionfish and pufferfish also present among the corals. The vibrant colours of both the corals and the fish create a dynamic underwater scene, characteristic of a thriving reef environment in the Philippines. This density of marine life, combined with the accessible nature of the site, makes it a popular spot for both training and exploration.

Visibility at Sangat House Reef generally ranges between 8 and 15 metres, offering clear views of the reef structure and its inhabitants. The sea in front of the resort is typically calm, with light or no noticeable current. While occasional mild drift can occur with tides and wind, the sheltered location within Coron Bay generally provides comfortable diving conditions, making it suitable for divers of varying experience levels.

The reef's maximum depth reaches approximately 28 metres, with significant coral cover observed at shallower depths, around 7 to 8 metres. Scientific surveys indicate an average hard coral cover of about one-third of the bottom in these shallower sections, highlighting the health of the sanctuary. This combination of a shallow reef flat, extensive coral gardens, and calm conditions establishes Sangat House Reef as a key training and exploration site in the Coron–Busuanga area.
