Aow Leuk, Koh Tao: Bay diving and nursery reef exploration

Aow Leuk, situated on the southeastern coast of Koh Tao, presents itself as a long, sandy bay, distinct from the island's bustling northern dive sites. The site's primary characteristic is its sheltered nature, providing calm, clear waters that make for comfortable diving. As you descend, the sandy floor gradually gives way to extensive coral gardens, both hard and soft, which extend along the bay's fringes and across its broader areas. These formations are not uniform but feature scattered bommies, providing localized structure and shelter for a variety of reef inhabitants.

The dive profile at Aow Leuk is generally shallow, beginning in very accessible depths, which makes it suitable for progressive descents and extended bottom times. Maximum depth on the site reaches 18 metres, with typical exploration often remaining shallower, around 12 to 16 metres. The transition from sandy patches to coral structures is gradual, allowing you to observe different microhabitats. Artificial reef structures are also present along the coastline, drawing additional marine life and offering points of interest that complement the natural coral growth. This blend of natural and artificial provides varied terrain for exploration.

One of the site's notable features is the presence of juvenile blacktip reef sharks (Carcharhinus melanopterus), which can be seen patrolling the very shallow waters, particularly near the shore. These young individuals give you a unique opportunity to observe their natural behaviour in a protected setting. Further out, you will encounter Jenkins' whiprays (Himantura jenkinsii) settled on the sandy bottom, often partially buried. Their presence underscores the importance of minimal contact with the substrate during your dive.

The bay's coral gardens are home to a diverse community of reef fish. You'll commonly see butterflyfish, bannerfish, and various species of snapper navigating the hard and soft coral formations. Harlequin sweetlips and yellowtail barracudas (Sphyraena flavicauda) are also consistent residents, often schooling near the larger coral heads. These schools provide a dynamic element to the reef, moving fluidly as you approach them, maintaining a respectful distance.

Aow Leuk is known for its macro life as well. Keep an eye out for nudibranchs, often found grazing on the coral and rocks, showcasing a range of colours and forms. Clownfish (Amphiprion percula) are resident in their host anemones, particularly the saddleback clownfish (Amphiprion polymnus). Lionfish (Pterois volitans), with their distinctive fins, can also be observed, usually holding position near crevices or under ledges.

The water clarity typically remains high within the bay, enhancing light penetration and revealing the full spectrum of coral and fish colours. The sheltered nature of Aow Leuk usually means minimal current, providing a relaxed diving experience. This calm environment, combined with the gradual depth profile and varied marine life, creates a conducive setting for observation, photography, and skill development.
