Black Turtle Dive

Located on the island of Koh Tao, Black Turtle Dive serves as a hub for divers looking for structured, high-quality instruction in the Gulf of Thailand. Beyond standard training, the centre is a dedicated space for marine conservation. They actively engage in coral restoration, sea turtle and whale shark monitoring, and reef protection, making it a destination for those who want to combine their passion for diving with environmental science.

The team is composed of experienced, well-compensated instructors who prioritise skill mastery over simply ticking off a certification. They maintain a strict ratio of no more than four divers per guide, ensuring that every member of the buddy pair receives the attention required for safe and competent diving.

Instruction is available in English, Thai, French, and German. The centre's approach is particularly suited to those who want to move beyond the basics, offering specialised training in areas like buoyancy control and underwater navigation.

The course catalogue is extensive, covering the full PADI spectrum. Beginners can start with the PADI Open Water Diver or Scuba Diver courses, while more experienced divers can progress through Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, and the Divemaster course.

For those looking to specialise, the centre offers technical and specialty training including PADI Tec 40, 45, and 50 Diver, Sidemount Diver, Wreck Diver, and Deep Diver. They also provide specialised training in freediving and a significant range of conservation-focused courses such as Coral Restoration, Reef Conservation Diver, and Sea Turtle Awareness.

The area is a hotspot for large pelagics and reef fish. You may encounter whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) during certain periods, alongside eagle rays (Aetobatus), hammerhead sharks, and various species of reef sharks. Large schools of bigeye trevallies (Caranx), barracudas, and fusiliers are common, as are giant groupers (Epinephelus itajara) and various species of snapper.

Macro life is abundant for those with an eye for detail. Divers can find many species of nudibranchs, including Flabellina sea slug, alongside various crustaceans, shrimps, and octopuses (Octopus vulgaris). Look closely for scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae), stonefish (Synanceia), and various species of crabs and shrimp.

The reef itself is a vibrant landscape of hard and soft corals, gorgonians, and sea fans. You will see many species of colourful reef fish living amongst the anemones, including clownfish (Amphiprion) and various butterflyfish (Chaetodon).

The best time to dive in this region is from March to June, when the weather is warm and the winds are calm. During this period, visibility can reach between 20 and 30 metres.

Conditions can vary significantly between sites; Sail Rock and Samran Pinnacle are known for having strong to variable currents. Divers should be prepared for these conditions, especially when navigating the pinnacles.
