Calypso Diving Koh Tao has been operating since 1999, situated on the sheltered eastern side of the island in Tanote Bay. This location provides a distinct advantage for those looking to escape the more crowded dive hubs, offering a peaceful environment for both training and exploration.

The centre is built around its own house reef, which begins directly on the beach. This allows for easy access to the water, making it an ideal setting for those completing their first certifications or for those who prefer shore-based diving.

The team is composed of experienced, stable instructors who provide training in German, English, French, and Thai. This multilingual approach ensures that communication remains clear, whether you are a local diver or an international student.

Safety and individual progress are central to their teaching philosophy. They maintain a strict limit of four divers per guide, ensuring that every student receives the attention required to master their skills in a controlled environment.

Calypso Diving offers a comprehensive range of SSI and CMAS courses. For those just starting, the curriculum includes Try Scuba, Bubblemaker, and Junior Open Water, leading through to the standard Open Water Diver certification.

For more experienced divers, they provide Advanced Adventurer, Rescue Diver, and Divemaster programmes. The school is equipped to handle all levels of progression, ensuring a continuous path from your first breath underwater to professional-level training.

The centre provides full equipment hire for both training courses and fun dives. For divers with specific visual requirements, they also offer corrective masks to ensure comfort and clarity underwater.

All necessary learning materials are managed via a dedicated application, streamlining the theory component of your training.

The house reef at Tanote Bay is a vibrant ecosystem, featuring a variety of hard and soft corals, sea fans, and sponges. You will find a diverse array of reef fish, including parrotfish (Calotomus), damselfish (Pomacentridae), and various species of snapper (Lutjanus), alongside butterflyfish (Chaetodon) and surgeonfish (Acanthuridae).

Larger residents include green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas), blue-spotted rays (Batoidea), and various species of moray eels (Muraenidae). You may also encounter great barracudas (Sphyraena barracuda) and different types of triggerfish (Balistidae) patrolling the reef.

For those interested in macro life, the area hosts a wealth of smaller creatures. Look for nudibranchs (Chromodoris willani), various crustaceans, and octopus (Octopus vulgaris) among the coral heads. Scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae) and pipefish are also frequently spotted by observant divers.

During certain seasons, you may have the opportunity to encounter whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) in the deeper waters of the region.

Tanote Bay is a protected area, meaning the waters remain calm and are largely unaffected by swell. This makes the house reef particularly suitable for training and for those who prefer stable conditions.

The best period for diving in the area is from February to September, when the sea is calm and visibility can reach up to 30 metres. Conversely, November can bring increased wind and rain, which may affect conditions.
