Crystal Dive

Crystal Dive has been a fixture of the Koh Tao diving community for more than 25 years. Located directly on Mae Haad Beach, the centre combines a professional training facility with a seaside resort, allowing you to transition from the classroom to the water with ease.

As an SSI Diamond Instructor Training Centre, the facility is geared towards high-level instruction and serious progression. From your first breath underwater to professional instructor training, the setup is designed to support every stage of a diver's development in a structured, professional environment.

The centre is led by experienced instructors with a deep understanding of the Southeast Asian diving landscape. They specialise in a wide range of SSI certifications, focusing on a personalised approach to teaching.

To ensure safety and quality of instruction, the centre maintains a strict ratio of maximum four divers per guide. This allows for close supervision during skills training and more attentive guidance during reef explorations or drift dives.

Instruction is available in English and Thai, catering to both local and international divers. The team also maintains a strong commitment to marine conservation through their partnership with The Coral Tribe, integrating ecological awareness into their training programmes.

The course catalogue is extensive, covering the full spectrum of SSI certifications. Beginners can start with the Scuba Diver or Open Water Course, while those looking to advance can progress through Advanced Open Water, Deep Diving, and Wreck Diving specialties.

For professional divers, the centre offers the Divemaster Course, Instructor Course, and Assistant Instructor Trainer programmes. There are also highly specialised modules such as Sidemount Diving, Decompression Diving, and Search and Recovery.

Technical and skill-based training is also a priority, with courses available in Perfect Buoyancy, Navigation, and Enriched Air Nitrox. For those interested in the science of the ocean, the centre offers various ecology-based specialties and conservation internships.

The centre operates three custom-built dive boats designed specifically for the local conditions. These vessels provide a stable platform for your dives and include refreshments for use while at sea.

Whether you are heading out for a day of reef exploration or a night dive, the boats are equipped to handle the requirements of the Koh Tao dive sites. Nitrox is available for use on these trips to support extended bottom times for those qualified to use it.

On-shore facilities include two purpose-built training pools, which are ideal for mastering buoyancy or practicing skills before heading into open water. The centre also provides air-conditioned classrooms for theory work and a dedicated area for rinsing kit.

Full equipment hire is available on-site, covering everything from regulators and BCDs to fins and masks. For those interested in underwater photography, the centre works with Koh Tao Pro Video to provide professional services. Note that personal cameras like GoPros are restricted during certain training courses, except for specific photography and video specialties.

The reefs around Koh Tao are vibrant, characterized by extensive coral gardens featuring hard corals (Scleractinia), soft corals (Alcyonacea), sea fans (Gorgoniidae), and whip corals. You will find a high density of reef fish, including various species of Butterflyfish (Chaetodon), Angelfish (Pomacanthidae), and Parrotfish (Calotomus) navigating through the staghorn corals and sponges (Porifera).

Large pelagics and schooling fish are a regular sight. You can encounter various species of Jacks (Carangidae), bigeye trevallies (Caranx), and barracuda schools, including Great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda), yellowtail barracuda, and chevron barracudas. Reef sharks, such as Blacktip reef shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus), and various rays like the blue-spotted stingray and Southern stingray (Hypanus americanus) also frequent these waters.

Sea turtles are a common presence, with Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) and Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) often spotted near the reef. You may also see large groupers (Epinephelus), moray eels (Muraenidae), and various species of snapper (Lutjanus).

For macro enthusiasts, the area offers plenty of smaller treasures. Look for Nudibranch (Chromodoris willani), various species of shrimp (Caridea), octopus (Octopus vulgaris), and seahorses (Hippocampus kuda). The seabed is also home to many crustaceans, garden eels, and unusual critters like ghost pipefish and various types of scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae).

The best time to dive in this area is between January and May, when the seas are calm and visibility is at its best. During this window, you also have the opportunity to see whale shark (Rhincodon typus) sightings between March and May.

During the monsoon season from November to December, you should expect more frequent rain and stronger winds. Occasional swell can also be felt between June and August due to the south-west winds.
