The reefs around Koh Tao are home to a diverse array of marine life. You will regularly encounter schools of fish including fusiliers, snappers, and various species of jacks and trevallies. Larger pelagics such as reef sharks (Carcharhinus), bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas), and blacktip reef sharks (Carcharhinus melanopterus) may be seen patrolling the deeper sections of the reef.

In the coral gardens, look for colourful inhabitants like butterflyfish (Chaetodon), angelfish (Pomacanthidae), and parrotfish (Calotomus). The reef structure itself is built upon a foundation of hard corals (Scleractinia), soft corals (Alcyonacea), gorgonians, and various sponges (Porifera), providing a home for many species including moray eels (Muraenidae), triggerfish (Balistidae), and lionfish (Pterois volitans).

Macro enthusiasts will find plenty to observe among the crevices and sandy patches. The area is known for its variety of nudibranchs, shrimps (Caridea), and octopuses (Octopus vulgaris). You can also find smaller creatures such as pipefish, ghost pipefishes, gobies (Gobiidae), and various species of crab (Brachyura) and hermit crabs.

Sea turtles are a frequent sight in these waters, including the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata). Watch the sandy bottom for blue-spotted stingrays (Batoidea) and other rays that frequent the reef flat.
