The marine life at Koh Tao is defined by its vibrant coral gardens and diverse pelagics. Large schools of chevron barracudas and yellowtail barracudas are common, alongside bigeye trevally (Caranx) and king mackerel.

On the rocky pinnacles and reef walls, look for giant grouper (Epinephelus itajara), batfish (Platax), and various species of triggerfish (Balistidae), including the titan triggerfish. You may also spot blue-spotted rays (Batoidea) and Jenkins' whiprays gliding over the sandy patches near the reef base.

For macro enthusiasts, the sites offer plenty of smaller treasures. Keep an eye out for nudibranchs (Chromodoris willani), various species of shrimp (Caridea), octopus (Octopus vulgaris), and pipefish. The reefs are also home to colourful anemones (Actiniaria) inhabited by clownfish (Amphiprion) and various species of scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae).

Diving is best experienced from March to October, when the sea is generally calm. During the monsoon season, typically from October to November, visibility can be reduced and conditions may be less favourable for diving.

Most dive sites around Koh Tao are characterised by minimal currents and calm seas, making them accessible for a wide range of experience levels. The granite pinnacles can sometimes host more movement, but the reef flats and sites like Twins offer very calm, sheltered conditions.
