The waters around Koh Tao are rich with life, particularly around the pinnacles and reefs. You can expect to see large schools of fish including bigeye trevally (Caranx), snapper, and various species of fusilier. Large predators such as great barracudas (Sphyraena barracuda), tuna (Thunnus), and reef sharks (Carcharhinus) are often seen patrolling the deeper sections.

During the peak months of April and May, whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) are a significant seasonal attraction. You may also encounter various rays, including blue-spotted stingrays and southern stingrays (Hypanus americanus), patrolling the sandy patches near the reefs.

In the colourful coral gardens, look for a diverse array of reef fish such as butterflyfish (Chaetodon), parrotfish (Calotomus), and various species of angelfish (Pomacanthidae). The hard and soft corals provide a home for many creatures, including sea anemones (Actiniaria) and various sponges (Porifera).

For those interested in macro life, the area offers plenty of opportunities to find nudibranchs (Chromodoris willani), various species of shrimp (Caridea), and octopuses (Octopus vulgaris). Keep an eye out for smaller inhabitants like clownfish (Amphiprion) hiding within anemones and various species of crabs (Brachyura) among the reef structure.

Diving in the area is most consistent from March to October. During the monsoon season, typically from October to January, the sea can become more agitated and visibility may be reduced.

While many sites offer calm conditions, divers should be prepared for stronger currents at certain locations, particularly around deeper pinnacles and wreck sites like the HTMS Suphairin.
