Twins, Koh Tao: Pinnacles and Reef Gardens for All Levels

Twins is shaped by two granite pinnacles that define the dive profile, rising from a sandy seabed to within 5 to 6 meters of the surface. These twin formations, along with a third less prominent rock, create varied habitats across a manageable depth range, generally staying within 5 to 18 meters, though some areas may touch 20 meters. The layout makes for straightforward navigation, ideal for both training dives and relaxed exploration, particularly valuable for those looking to practice skills in calm conditions.

Approaching Twins, you'll notice the two main pinnacles side-by-side, creating a natural channel between them that concentrates marine life. This channel, along with surrounding coral gardens and sandy patches, acts as a nursery for juvenile fish. The rock faces offer good growth of soft corals and host a variety of smaller creatures. It’s a site that rewards a slow pace, allowing divers to observe the details of the reef system and the behaviour of its inhabitants.

The site hosts a range of resident marine species. You can expect to encounter butterflyfish, triggerfish, and numerous moray eels peering from crevices. Blue-spotted stingrays (Taeniura lymma) are frequently seen in the sandy areas, often settled close to the base of the pinnacles. Look closely among the coral growth for nudibranchs and various shrimp species, especially during night dives when many smaller creatures become more active.

One notable feature at Twins is a known 'Bat Café' to the southeast of the shallow pinnacle, offering a reliable spot to observe batfish (Platax orbicularis). Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) families are often found protected within anemones, particularly near a ring of rocks that provides a safe haven. Just north of the pinnacles, there's also Buoyancy World, an artificial reef project specifically designed for buoyancy practice without impacting the natural coral.

Beyond the core pinnacles, there are sandy areas that serve as excellent training grounds for Open Water skills and buoyancy refinement. The site's generally calm conditions, sheltered location near Koh Nang Yuan, and clear visibility make it an ideal setting for these activities. These conditions also allow for focused observation of smaller species like gobies and various crustaceans, often found near the sand-reef interface.

Twins is also popular for night dives. As dusk settles, the site transforms, providing opportunities to see species that are more active after sunset. Hunting barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) can be observed, as can blue-spotted rays (Taeniura lymma) moving across the sandy bottom. The presence of bioluminescence adds another layer to the nocturnal experience, highlighting the diversity of life that emerges once the sun sets.

While generally calm, the current at Twins can intensify at certain times, typically with tide changes. During these periods, the marine life responds noticeably, and soft corals fully extend, making for a dynamic viewing experience. Lionfish (Pterois miles), often perched on the reef or hovering, are common here; observe them from a respectful distance as they are striking predators. The site occasionally sees green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) and, during the right season, even whale sharks (Rhincodon typus).

Visibility at Twins is often clear, contributing to its appeal as a versatile dive site. Its proximity to Mae Haad makes it one of the most accessible sites on the west coast of Koh Tao. The combination of varied habitats within a compact area, from rocky pinnacles to coral gardens and sandy expanses, ensures there's always something to discover, whether you're working on basic skills or focusing on macro life.
