L’éolienne, Rangiroa: slack current dive in Tiputa Pass

Your dive at L’éolienne begins an approximate 350 meters from the entrance angle of Tiputa Pass, on the oceanic reef slope. Here, you'll immediately notice the absence of the typical strong outgoing current that defines most dives in the pass, offering a remarkably serene starting point. This initial calm allows you to comfortably orient yourself and observe the topography before moving closer to the main features of the site.

As you approach the angle of the pass, the reef remains consistently on your left, while the vast blue of the open ocean unfolds on your right. This configuration provides a clear visual reference, guiding you along the reef's edge as you gradually deepen. The transition from the calm of the starting point to the subtle influences of the pass current closer to the corner creates a dynamic, yet controlled, diving environment.

The maximum depth achievable at L'éolienne is between 25 to 26 meters, allowing for extended bottom times and thorough exploration of the reef's intricate details. Within this depth range, you'll encounter a vibrant ecosystem. Keep a keen eye out for the resident green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) gracefully gliding, as well as the powerful tuna that often patrol these waters. The sheltered position of the site acts as a magnet for a variety of fish species, thriving in conditions less exposed to the main flow.

The rich diversity of marine life is one of the primary draws to L'éolienne. Dolphins are frequent visitors, their playful presence adding an element of surprise and excitement to any dive here. You may also spot the impressive manta rays (Manta birostris) as they glide by, or the distinctive leopard rays (Aetobatus narinari) foraging on the sandy bottom. The elusive Napoleon wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus), with its characteristic hump, is another highlight to watch for.
