Windmill, Rangiroa: sheltered reef slope for megafauna

Windmill is situated on the oceanic reef slope of the Tiputa Pass, positioned a short distance away from the main entrance of the pass. The topography consists of a sloping reef that leads out toward the open ocean, providing a clear view of the blue on one side and the reef structure on the other. This specific location is chosen by operators when the objective is to find a dive that remains sheltered from the most aggressive currents found in the channel. You will find yourself navigating a gentle slope that offers a stable platform for observation.

The dive profile typically begins in shallower waters before descending toward a maximum depth of around 26 metres. As you move along the slope, the terrain transitions from the shallower reef edge toward the deeper drop-off. This gradient allows you to move comfortably along the reef wall while keeping an eye on the open water. The depth remains manageable for a wide range of divers, with much of the interesting action occurring in the upper 18 metres of the water column.

One of the defining characteristics of Windmill is its role as a sanctuary for non-shark megafauna. While other sites in the Tiputa Pass focus on high-velocity drift dives to see sharks, Windmill is where you encounter species like bottlenose dolphins and manta rays in a more relaxed setting. The presence of large tuna and various sea turtles makes this a high-activity site for divers looking to see diverse marine life. The lack of heavy current allows for longer observation times without the need for constant effort against a surge.

The visibility at this site is consistently high, often reaching between 20 and 30 metres. This clarity is essential for spotting species that dwell in the blue water, such as stingrays or the larger movements of tuna. Because the light penetrates well through the clear oceanic water, the details of the reef slope are clearly visible even at the deeper end of the dive. This clarity, combined with the relatively calm conditions, creates an ideal environment for underwater photography and steady observation.

When observing the reef fauna, you will encounter a variety of resident species that inhabit the slope. Large humphead wrasse are common fixtures along the reef, often seen patrolling the area near the coral structures. You may also notice various tropical reef fish moving across the slope, providing a constant backdrop of activity. The combination of resident reef life and passing pelagics makes the site feel much more populated than a standard reef dive.

The currents at Windmill are generally light, distinguishing it from the more demanding sites like The Run or The Crossing. The intensity of the water movement depends on the tidal state, specifically whether the tide is incoming or outgoing relative to the pass. When the tide is transitioning, you may feel a slight movement, but the site is specifically selected by local guides for being 'out of the way' of the main tidal drifts. This makes it a reliable choice for divers who want to see large species without the physical demand of a heavy drift.

The site is an essential part of the Rangiroa diving experience because it provides a different perspective on the Tiputa Pass ecosystem. Instead of a high-adrenaline drift, Windmill offers a more contemplative look at the ocean-side reef. It allows you to witness the scale of the local fauna, including grey reef sharks, silvertip sharks, and silky sharks, in a controlled and stable environment. This makes the encounter with these predators more manageable for those who prefer to maintain position while observing them.
