Shag Rock, Sharm El-Sheikh: Wreck of the Kingston and reef diving

Shag Rock is a renowned dive site located approximately 5 miles south of Sha'ab Ali, distinguished by a shallow reef and a small metallic lighthouse on its southeast side. The dive typically commences near this lighthouse, where a fixed mooring is available on a large sandy plateau at a depth of 8 to 10 metres. This sheltered starting point allows divers to comfortably orient themselves before proceeding to explore the main attractions of the site, establishing a clear dive profile from the outset.

The primary draw of Shag Rock is the Kingston wreck, a British merchant vessel that tragically ran aground on February 22, 1881. This steam sailer now rests on the sandy seafloor, oriented south-north, with its bow extending up to the reef itself. The wreck, measuring 78 metres in length, lies between 4 and 17 metres, making it accessible for extended bottom times and suitable for divers of all levels.

Exploration of the Kingston usually begins at its stern, where the intact propeller is visible at 15 metres. From this point, divers can easily access the interior of the hull. The absence of the wooden deck allows ample sunlight to penetrate and illuminate the inner structure, revealing the engine room with its boilers still visible, a testament to the ship's past.

The bow section of the wreck, situated at 4 metres, is largely destroyed, but its scattered remains, including parts of the mast resting on the sandy bottom to the right of the main wreckage, contribute to the site's historical ambiance. This shallower section seamlessly blends into the reef, creating a continuous dive experience that transitions effortlessly from wreck exploration to natural reef environment.

Beyond the wreck, Shag Rock offers a vibrant reef system, which divers can explore by drifting either east or west. This panoramic, sloping reef is a tapestry of life, characterized by intricate hard coral formations that provide shelter and hunting grounds for a diverse array of marine species. The reef's gentle slope allows for comfortable and extended exploration, offering continuous visual engagement.

The reef is home to numerous smaller inhabitants, including surgeonfish (Acanthurus and Zebrasoma), rabbitfish (Siganus), and various nudibranchs. Schools of sleek fusiliers (Caesio spp.) often patrol the wreck's structure, creating shimmering curtains of silver, while goatfish (Mullidae) can be observed sifting through the sandy patches around the wreck. The combination of the accessible wreck and the thriving reef ensures a diverse underwater experience.

Larger marine life is also frequently encountered, with trevallies (Caranx and Carangoides), groupers, and snappers commonly seen patrolling the coral formations. Divers should keep an eye out for green turtles, which are regular visitors, and white-tip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus) that can be found resting or cruising. Spotting an eagle ray is also possible, adding to the site's rich biodiversity.

An additional highlight of diving Shag Rock is the frequent presence of dolphins in the area. While not a guaranteed sighting, encounters with these marine mammals are not uncommon during ascents or surface intervals. These interactions, when they occur, further enhance the dive experience, underscoring the site's vibrant and dynamic ecosystem.
