San Juan, Cozumel: Northern Reef Drift Diving

San Juan is a renowned dive site located on the northern reefs of Cozumel, outside the main marine park boundaries. It is frequently paired with sites further north like Barracuda or Cantrell, often serving as the second dive in a two-tank trip. The dive is characterized by a vigorous, consistent northward current, making it a dynamic drift dive where divers enter the water up-current and let the flow carry them along the reef's distinctive topography.

The topography of San Juan features an expansive plateau of coral formations, stretching out and shaped by the consistent flow of water. It is dominated by extensive formations of finger coral and impressive lettuce coral, interspersed with large sponges. These structures create a vibrant habitat, providing shelter and feeding grounds for a variety of smaller reef fish, with the reef continuously unfolding to offer a shifting panorama of corals and sponges.

As divers drift, the reef presents a series of ledges and overhangs, forming natural hiding places and providing a platform for observing the resident marine life. Beneath these overhangs and within the reef's crevices, dense clusters of French grunts and schoolmasters (Lutjanus apodus) often congregate, forming tight schools during the day. The clarity of the water here generally allows these features to be appreciated from a distance, often exceeding 30 meters.

The reef surface itself is a mosaic of life, with thousands of damselfish (Stegastes) darting amongst the corals, their territorial displays and constant activity a perpetual motion against the backdrop of the red seaweed that carpets certain parts of the reef. This close-up intricate life contrasts with the broader movements of larger marine species that occasionally pass through the blue. The rapid flow of water creates a unique environment where certain species flourish, and you'll observe reef fish holding their positions against the current or darting into the flow to feed.

One of the defining features of San Juan is the consistent presence of nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum). These placid bottom-dwellers are often found resting in crevices or under ledges on the reef top, offering exhilarating viewing opportunities as you drift silently over their resting spots. The light filters through the upper water column dynamically, painting the reef in shifting patterns of sunlight and shadow, adding to the immersive experience and making each pass over the reef feel fresh and engaging.
