Chankanaab Shallow, Cozumel: reef diving for new divers

Diving Chankanaab Shallow puts you directly on a platform reef, lying between 10 and 12 meters, just offshore from Chankanaab Park. This is a low-relief reef structure, extending over a sandy base, designed for an easy, controlled drift. You'll find yourself navigating a series of coral heads and scattered patches that rise from the sand, forming a gentle terrain that is straightforward to follow.

The site features distinct areas, including a flat sandy bottom adjacent to the reef. This sandy stretch provides a different environment from the coral patches, often revealing crustaceans like various crabs and spiny lobsters. As you move along, you'll spot moray eels, particularly the spotted moray, peering from their hiding spots within the coral and rocky outcrops.

While the current here is typically mild, it's still a drift dive, characteristic of Cozumel. The flow generally runs north-south or south-north along the reef, making for effortless movement without demanding strenuous finning. You'll cover ground smoothly, allowing you to focus on the marine life rather than fighting the water, a significant advantage for those new to current diving.

The resident fish population includes schools of grunt and snapper, often seen sheltering in the coral formations. On the sandy bottom, keep an eye out for stingrays and the camouflaged peacock flounder, which blend into their surroundings.
