You can sit beneath the garden greenery, take a drink to the beach or let the evening develop at its own pace. Gili Trawangan does have lively nightlife, but the resort also gives you somewhere private to retreat to when you have had enough noise, sun and human conversation for one day.

It works particularly well if you want your accommodation, meals and sea time close together, without turning the whole stay into a timetable. Families are welcome, while couples can make good use of the more private villa-style accommodation and outdoor spaces.

You are on Gili Trawangan, Indonesia, directly on the island's main beach and a short walk south of the main harbour. That puts boat arrivals and departures within easy reach, without placing you in the middle of every passing crowd. The island is the largest of the three Gilis, with white-sand beaches, clear blue water and no motorised vehicles.

North West Beach is about 0.3 miles away, while North East Beach is roughly 0.6 miles away. South East Beach is about 0.8 miles on foot, giving you several stretches of coast to explore when sitting still becomes too demanding. Turtle Shore is around 0.4 miles away, and the Gili Trawangan Turtle Hatchery about 0.7 miles away.

You can reach Jali Kitchen in around 0.25 miles on foot, with Tiki Grove and Pituq Waroeng also close by. Bars and other island venues sit within roughly 0.5 to 0.7 miles, while Sunset Point and Gili Trawangan Harbour are nearby landmarks. The location is convenient, but the island's transport rule matters: you will be getting around on foot, by bicycle or by horse-drawn carriage rather than by car.

The accommodation is arranged around the garden, so your outlook may be towards greenery, the courtyard or the pool rather than straight onto the sea. That is useful if you prefer a little separation from the beach activity. The One-Bedroom Villa is the sensible choice when you want more room to spread out, particularly if three people are sharing; for two, the Standard Villa keeps things simpler and more compact.

Air conditioning matters on an island where a day in salt water can leave you feeling thoroughly cooked. You also have a ceiling fan, a private bathroom, a shower, a refrigerator, a minibar and a tea and coffee maker, so cold water and a quiet drink are close at hand when you return to your room. A desk is available if you need to deal with a few messages, although Gili Trawangan is not exactly begging for office hours.

The villas are on the ground floor and include a terrace or patio area, with views depending on the accommodation. Two Deluxe Double rooms have private balconies with sea views, loungers and a seating area, as well as tea and coffee facilities, a flat-screen television and a desk. Children over five are welcome; children aged six and above are charged as adults, and cots and extra beds are not available.

The Burgerhouse handles breakfast, lunch and dinner, serving from 7am until midnight. There is a bar within the restaurant rather than a separate bar operation listed for the resort. You can order a cocktail beneath the beach parasols, watch the island wake up at breakfast, or settle in for a late meal without having to arrange another journey. The room facilities also include a minibar and tea and coffee maker.

The outdoor swimming pool has a sea view and gives you a straightforward place to cool down or spend a non-diving afternoon. It is also used for diving courses, so the atmosphere around it may be more purposeful at times than the phrase 'pool day' suggests. The private beach area, white sand, garden, terrace and shaded seating provide the slower alternatives.

Snorkelling, boat excursions and equipment hire are available, while bicycles give you an easy way to see more of the island without asking your legs to walk everywhere. Horse-drawn carriage hire is another option. You can also make your own route towards Turtle Shore, the hatchery, the viewpoint area or Marine Walk Gili Trawangan.

When the sun goes down, the island's nightlife becomes part of the choice rather than a background detail. You can head out to the bars and venues nearby, or stay by the beach with a cocktail and let other people make the noise. There is no spa listed, so relaxation here means water, shade, garden space and choosing not to hurry.

Lombok International Airport is about 31 miles away as the crow flies, followed by a boat journey to Gili Trawangan. Fast boats operate from Bali and Lombok, and the resort can arrange daily transfers from the Senggigi area of Lombok. Arrange the transfer with the property before travelling, particularly if your arrival time depends on a particular boat connection.

Check-in runs from 2pm to 10pm, and you need to tell the property your arrival time in advance. Check-out is from 7am to 11am. There is no age requirement for check-in, while children over five are welcome and smoking is not permitted.

Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, and private bathrooms, air conditioning, a refrigerator, minibar and safety deposit box are part of the useful day-to-day setup. Motorised vehicles are prohibited on Gili Trawangan, so plan for walking, cycling or a horse-drawn carriage once you arrive.
