Rama Beach Resort & Villas gives you a resort base in Tuban, with Kuta's activity close by and a garden setting to retreat to when you have had enough traffic, noise and general Bali motion for one day. The atmosphere is modern Balinese rather than ultra-minimal: wood interiors, tropical planting and outdoor spaces around the pool make the place feel more like a small resort than a town hotel.

It suits couples who want a calmer address without being marooned, but families are catered for too. You can choose between rooms, garden-view villas and villas with private plunge pools, while the larger villa layout is the sensible option when three people and their luggage need to coexist without taking turns standing up.

There is enough here to keep a non-diving companion occupied without turning the resort into a theme park. A restaurant, spa, swimming pool, gym and tennis court cover the useful bases. In other words: somewhere to recover, not somewhere that demands your attention.

Kuta town centre is less than a 10-minute walk away, so you can reach cafés, restaurants and shops on foot. Sa Cafe Bali and Sugar Dan Spice Restaurant are around 50 metres away, while Majoly Restaurant is about 100 metres from the resort. For coffee, Starbucks at Lippo Mall Kuta is about 300 metres away.

Ngurah Rai International Airport is about 1 km away. That is convenient on the map, although the resort gives a 30-minute drive time, so allow for Bali traffic rather than planning your arrival with a stopwatch and misplaced optimism.

The rooms and villas are designed in a modern Balinese style, with private balconies looking over the garden. Air conditioning matters here: it gives you a proper chance to cool down after a hot, salty day, while the seating area and desk mean you are not forced to conduct every conversation from the edge of the bed.

For a couple, a Deluxe Double or Twin Room or a Premium Deluxe Cottage keeps things straightforward, with a super-king-size bed and a garden outlook. If the evening calls for more privacy, the one-bedroom villas with private plunge pools give you your own water without having to negotiate for a lounger around the main pool. A garden-view villa category also includes a 60-minute Balinese massage for two, which is a reasonably convincing argument for booking the room rather than merely admiring its name.

The Family Room adds a sofa bed, while the Villa for four adults gives a group more room to spread out. Every room has a television, minibar and tea- and coffee-making facilities, useful for the small rituals that make a night work: cold drinks, a cup before bed and somewhere to put the day's sandy clothes. Daily housekeeping, a wardrobe, slippers, bathrobes and a private bathroom keep the practical side uncomplicated.

Breakfast is served daily at Dewi Shinta Restaurant, with vegetarian, Asian and American choices in buffet form. The restaurant works in an open-air setting overlooking the landscaped garden and swimming pool, so you can start the morning outside rather than under another ceiling. Breakfast in your room is also available when an early start makes conversation an unnecessary luxury.

Dewi Shinta serves Indonesian, Balinese, international and fusion cooking, using local fresh produce alongside the wider menu. It is open daily from 7am until 11pm, which gives you useful flexibility when the day's return time depends on boats, tides or the usual post-dive ability to move slowly. Room service is available as well.

There is a bar for cocktails, plus a snack bar for something less ambitious than a full meal. Special-diet menus can be arranged, and cooking classes are offered for an activity that leaves you with something more useful than another holiday photograph. The restaurant also handles events, and Balinese cultural performances and a Fire Dance take place during Lunar Night BBQ.

The outdoor swimming pool sits among landscaped gardens and coconut palms, with sun loungers and pool towels available. It opens from 8am to 8pm, giving you a sensible window for a gentle swim, a spell in the sun or the more demanding sport of remaining horizontal. The garden setting does the work without needing loud entertainment.

Rama Spa offers massages, including full-body, couples, foot, back, neck, head and hand treatments. Spa days come with kimonos, slippers and towels, and you can use the relaxation area before or after a treatment. For a couple, the couples massage is the obvious choice; for a diver with a back that has been carrying cylinders for years, the menu gives you more precise targets.

If sitting still is not your plan, the leisure club includes a gym and exercise classes, while the tennis court and tennis equipment provide a reason to stretch the legs.
