The Patra Bali Resort & Villas sits in a large tropical setting in South Kuta, with direct access to the beach, several pools and enough space to avoid feeling boxed in by the usual Kuta bustle.

The atmosphere leans towards a full resort rather than a small hideaway. You have gardens, bicycle paths, evening performances, family facilities and several places to eat, so a non-diving companion has plenty to do while you are underwater. It is also a useful choice for couples, families and travellers who want the convenience of a sizeable property without being stranded away from Kuta.

The address is in Kuta, Indonesia, on Jl. Ir. H. Juanda at South Kuta Beach. The resort is directly on the seafront, with a private beach area, a sun terrace, gardens and views towards the Indian Ocean. Jerman Beach is around 300 metres away, while Tuban Beach is about 650 metres away on foot. Kuta Beach is roughly 1.3 miles away by foot.

Ngurah Rai International Airport is a five-minute drive away, which is unusually handy when your luggage includes more than shirts and sandals. Kuta Square is about 1.2 miles away, with a complimentary shuttle service running there five times a day. A few cafés and restaurants are also within the surrounding area, although the resort itself gives you more than enough choice for most evenings.

The room choice is less about finding a single perfect category than matching the space to the way you travel. A standard deluxe room suits two people who want a straightforward base, with a king-size bed or twin beds, a private balcony and views over the garden or inner courtyard. The larger suites are more sensible when you like room around your bags, clothes and the general debris generated by a day outdoors.

For four guests, the interconnecting rooms and family suite make the practical difference: separate sleeping arrangements are easier than negotiating one room with four adults and a pile of luggage. The Embassy suite is the grandest option for a group of four. Couples may prefer one of the villas, while the honeymoon and garden villa categories offer a more secluded feel within the resort grounds. The Studio Suite Villa has an ocean view, which changes the whole business of sitting outside with a drink.

Solid wood fittings give the rooms a classic Balinese character rather than a bare modern look. Air conditioning matters here, particularly when you return hot, salty and ready to stop moving. You also have a balcony, television with cable and satellite channels, a safe, wardrobe, desk, dining area, tea and coffee-making facilities, an electric kettle and free Wi-Fi. Daily housekeeping is included, and room service runs until 9 pm, useful when the idea of walking to dinner has become an unreasonable expedition.

Teratai also covers lunch and dinner, with Indonesian, Western and Oriental dishes in an air-conditioned dining room or on the outdoor terrace.

For Italian food, The Rinascimento Italian Restaurant sits beside the large pool and serves lunch and dinner, including wood-fired pizza, pasta and other Italian dishes. It opens from 11 am to 11 pm, with live music during dinner and views towards the ocean. Tenku Japanese Restaurant offers sushi, sashimi, robatayaki and teppanyaki, with counters and a tatami room; its teppanyaki includes the cooking performance at the table. This restaurant is currently under maintenance, so check its operation before planning your evening around it.

There are two named bars. The Kintamani Sunken Bar is in the pool, open from 10 am to 10 pm, with cocktails, fruit mixology, homemade milkshakes, light meals and healthy snacks. The Lobby Lounge stays open around the clock, serving retro cocktails, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, light bites and a late-night drink when your body clock has not yet caught up with Bali. Evening entertainment includes Balinese dance, acoustic performances and live bands at Teratai, with additional dance and sound performances at Rinascimento on selected days.

Three outdoor pools give you different ways to spend a surface interval. The Kintamani Pool has separate adult and children’s zones, a pool bar and space for activities such as water polo, mini football and volleyball. The Tamblingan Pool is semi-private, suited to the afternoon when you want water, shade and fewer reasons to speak to anyone.

The Beratan Pool is reserved for villa and VIP guests and comes with four gazebos used for candlelit dinners for two. That makes the villa categories worth considering if you want a quieter pool setting rather than simply a larger room. Pool and beach towels are available, and the beachfront position gives you an alternative to chlorinated water when the sea is the more tempting option.

The resort is five minutes by car from Ngurah Rai International Airport. An airport shuttle is available, and a complimentary shuttle runs to Kuta Square five times daily.
