English and Japanese are spoken by the hotel team, which makes the practical business of arranging your stay straightforward. Mimpi Resort Menjangan is a nature-focused resort for divers, couples and families who would rather trade a busy strip for a lagoon, forest and an evening by the water.

The resort opened in 1998 and sits directly on a natural hot spring. That gives the place its own rhythm: garden-facing rooms, private entrances, high ceilings, wooden furniture and semi-outdoor bathrooms, with the hot spring pools doing the heavy lifting when your legs have had enough for one day. There is also a private beach area, terraces and a garden, so you can move between water, shade and dinner without turning recovery into a full-scale expedition.

You are in Banyuwedang, on the western side of Bali, Indonesia, in a lagoon-like inlet beside mangroves and jungle. The resort is directly on the waterfront, with a white-sand beach area on site; White Sand Beach is about 0.9 miles away by car, while Pemuteran Beach is about 6 miles away.

West Bali National Park sits about 1.3 miles away by road, giving you a proper change of scenery when you leave the resort grounds. Munduk Kemiri is around 2.9 miles away by road, and Pulaki Temple about 7 miles. For food beyond the resort, Warung Makan Sri Ayu is roughly 150 feet away, with other nearby restaurants around 300 to 650 feet from the property.

The airport logistics deserve a clear look before you book. Ngurah Rai International Airport is about a four-hour drive, while Banyuwangi International Airport is around 31 miles away and takes about one and a half hours by car.

The Patio Room is the sensible choice if you want a compact base for two and expect to spend your waking hours outdoors. It gives you a king-size bed, a garden view, air conditioning, a refrigerator and a private entrance, with a mosquito net for nights when you want the windows open to the tropical air. Marble or tiled floors and high ceilings keep the room feeling cooler and less boxed in than the dimensions alone might suggest.

For a couple treating the room as part of the holiday, the Courtyard Villas change the calculation. Choose the version with a natural spring tub if soaking is the main event, or the private-pool villa if you want your own water close at hand. The larger Grand Courtyard Villa gives you more room to spread out, which matters when two divers return with wet clothes, cameras and the usual collection of bags that somehow multiplies during a trip.

Bathrooms are semi-outdoor and private, with shower or bath facilities, bathrobes and slippers. There is a seating area and desk, plus a kettle, minibar and refrigerator: useful details when you come back thirsty, sandy or simply too tired to go straight to the restaurant. Soundproof rooms and private entrances help keep the night separate from the resort's social areas, while daily housekeeping keeps the practical side of the stay in order.

Breakfast is included, with continental, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, Asian and American choices served buffet-style. That is a useful spread before a morning on the water, particularly if your travelling companion wants something different from your own predictable plate of eggs and coffee.

Lunch and dinner are served at the Sunset Beach Restaurant & Bar, an international restaurant set beside the shore. Part of it is built over the water, with wooden terraces and a grass roof; the views take in the lagoon, mountains and mangrove forest. In the late afternoon, you can settle in for tea or coffee, then stay for dinner beneath the stars. No need to dress as if you are attending a gala: the setting does the work.

There is one bar, integrated into the same venue and set slightly down into the restaurant. It serves a range of drinks and is designed for the conversation that starts with “just one” after dinner. The resort also grows fruit, vegetables, herbs and spices in its two-acre organic garden, including long beans, pumpkins, cucumbers, lemongrass, tomatoes, aubergines, lemons, papayas, sweet potatoes and ginger. Special food experiences include a garden picnic, afternoon tea, a floating breakfast for villas with private pools, and picnics at Gili Putih Beach.

The main post-dive attraction is not a conventional swimming pool but three communal hot-spring pools, built over the natural spring. The water is naturally enriched with sodium chloride, calcium and sulphate, so this is where you can let the shoulders loosen while the day quietly leaves the body. Villas with private hot-spring pools add the same option without leaving your own courtyard, while selected villas also have private swimming pools.

Mimpi Spring Spa keeps the theme going with massages, Balinese and aromatherapy treatments, facials, reflexology, foot and back treatments, body wraps and scrubs, hot-stone therapy and herbal spring baths. Couples' massages are available, as is an outdoor relaxation lounge with a hot-spring Jacuzzi facing the bay. After repetitive finning and the occasional battle with a stubborn wetsuit, a treatment menu with feet, back and shoulders in mind is not a difficult sell.

You can also join yoga, meditation, chi gong or ecstatic dance in the open-air yoga pavilion. Away from the wellness programme, bicycles are available for exploring the surroundings, and the resort offers kayaking, fishing, snorkelling, walking tours and boat excursions. Land-based outings include temples, local markets, craft workshops, traditional salt-making, a pearl farm, West Bali National Park and the hot spring at Banjar. Families can use the children's playground and kids' pool, while the Menjangan Island snorkelling sites at Pos 1 and Pos 2 are suited to children; the Bubblemaker programme is available from age eight.

Check-in starts at 14:00 and check-out runs until 12:00. Early arrival can be requested, and luggage storage is available, which helps if your transport and room times do not line up neatly. A 24-hour front desk, lockers, currency exchange and a tour desk cover the small practical matters that tend to appear once you are away from home.

Airport transfers are available from Ngurah Rai International Airport, with private car transfers also possible from another hotel or residence in Bali. The road journey takes about four hours, so arranging transport with the resort is sensible rather than leaving the final leg to chance. Car hire and shuttle services are also available, and on-site parking is free.

Wi-Fi is free throughout the resort. Air conditioning, a mosquito net, room service, daily housekeeping and laundry support make the rooms workable for a longer diving stay. Children of any age are welcome, with cots and extra beds available depending on the accommodation chosen; extra beds and cots are subject to availability. Pets are not allowed, and cash is an accepted payment method.

The resort's environmental work is built around the four Rs: recycle, reduce, reuse and rethink. Water refill stations support the use of reusable bottles, while the two-acre organic garden supplies the restaurant and uses thermal pool wastewater for irrigation. Aquatic plants are used in the water treatment process.

The spa uses local and natural construction materials, recycled wooden furniture, LED lighting, bamboo linen and recycled paper. Its treatments use natural products made from fresh ingredients, keeping the ecological approach tied to everyday operations rather than a plaque on the wall.

Since 1998, the resort has worked with the local fishing community to move away from blast and cyanide fishing and towards alternative sustainable practices. It has also supported seaweed cultivation involving more than 150 local residents. Around three-quarters of the staff come from nearby villages, linking the resort's operation to the surrounding community.
