Deep Reef Pemuteran presents a dramatic underwater landscape, characterized by its abrupt sides that plunge from a relatively shallow plateau down to 38 metres. This distinctive topography, discovered in 1996, allows for a multi-layered dive experience, transitioning from the sunlit shallows where light penetrates readily, to the deeper, more shadowed sections of the reef. The dive begins on a plateau at 12 metres, a vibrant expanse teeming with life and colour. Here, impressive tabular corals spread wide, providing shelter and feeding grounds for countless reef inhabitants. Large leather corals sway gently with any subtle water movement, while a diverse array of sponges cling to the reef structure. Keep an eye out for the intricate details of nudibranchs, often found crawling across these surfaces, and the striking red of flamboyant scallops (Ctenoides scaber) as they cling to crevices, adding a flash of colour to the coral gardens.

As you move away from the plateau and begin to explore the steeper sections of the reef, the character of the dive shifts. The abrupt walls create a different environment, where larger species often cruise. This is where you might encounter magnificent eagle rays (Aetobatus narinari), effortlessly gliding through the water column with their distinctive wing-like fins. Schools of fusiliers (Caesionidae) may sweep past in unison, their movements synchronized as they navigate the currents along the wall.

Below the plateau, towards the maximum depth of 38 metres, the reef continues to offer visual stimulation. The change in light and pressure here means a different set of organisms thrives. The visibility, typically ranging from 10 to 20 metres, allows for ample viewing distance, though it can vary with conditions.
