Papua Paradise Eco Resort is an eco-lodge on an uninhabited island, built around 26 traditional-style overwater bungalows and a small collection of places to eat, relax and watch the natural world get on with its business.

This is an adults-only address: children are not allowed, and the minimum age for check-in is 18. That makes the setting particularly suited to couples and to divers who would rather hear birds and reef water than a poolside playlist. You have the sea, jungle and house reef close at hand, with a spa, restaurant and bar for the hours when your logbook is shut.

Your address is Pulau Birie, Indonesia, on the north-eastern peninsula of Birie Island in the Selat Sagawin area of Raja Ampat. The resort sits directly on the coast, with jungle inland and reef in front; the bungalows overlook the water rather than a road, town or neighbouring hotel. This is the useful sort of remote: you arrive by boat, and the geography keeps the surroundings firmly in charge.

Sorong is the gateway. The boat transfer from Sorong takes about two hours, while the nearest listed airport, Domine Eduard Osok Airport, is around 39 miles away by road and onward connections. There is no need to picture yourself strolling into town for a forgotten bottle of sun cream. The tour desk and concierge can help with arrangements, while the island itself offers jungle, birds, mangroves and the protected lagoon.

The room choice is mainly about how much space and privacy you want around the bed, rather than about collecting categories. The Deluxe Double Room is the natural pick if you want more room to spread out, while the Superior Double Room suits a couple who would rather keep things simple and spend the daylight hours outside. Both are designed for two adults, and the accommodation list also includes family rooms even though the property’s policy does not allow children.

Sea views, a balcony and a private bathroom put the practical pleasures in the right order. You can step outside for the first light, return to a sofa or seating area, and use the desk when the camera files need attention. A refrigerator is handy for keeping water cold, while the kettle and tea or coffee maker are welcome before an early start. There is also a dressing area, wardrobe, drying rack and private entrance.

At night, the rooms have a fan and a mosquito net rather than a long list of electronic distractions. Daily housekeeping keeps the bungalow in order, and the private setting gives you somewhere to sit with the day’s photographs before dinner. Wi-Fi is available throughout the resort, although the public-area service is the detail that matters most if you are hoping to disconnect properly.

Sunset Restaurant covers breakfast, lunch and dinner, with the sea and house reef providing the view while you eat. Meals are served buffet-style, with European, Indonesian and international dishes, plus fresh tropical fruit. Breakfast is continental and buffet-based, including local specialities, warm dishes and pastries.

The useful distinction is in the ingredients rather than the menu adjectives. Produce such as bananas, jackfruit, cassava, water spinach and other greens comes from villages on the surrounding islands, while additional fruit and vegetables come from the resort’s garden or the local port in Sorong. Yoghurt, bread, cakes, pasta and ravioli are made in-house and served fresh. That gives the buffet a more convincing sense of place than a row of identical hotel trays.

There is one bar: Sunset Bar. It serves local beer, wine, cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks, so you can move from the restaurant to something colder without needing another expedition. No room service is listed; the restaurant and bar are the places to plan around when you are hungry, thirsty and no longer interested in discussing buoyancy.

The protected lagoon is directly in front of the resort, and snorkelling is available when you want a shorter session than a full dive. Kayaking offers another way to look at the shoreline, while the beach chairs and garden give you perfectly respectable alternatives to heroic activity. A terrace, a sea view and a cold drink can count as an itinerary here.

Spa in Paradise is the place for the more deliberate form of recovery. Treatments include traditional and aromatic massages, scrubs, body treatments, facials, four-hand Ayurvedic massage, manicures, pedicures and a cream hair bath. The three private treatment rooms face the ocean and include baths and rainfall showers, with outdoor areas for the beauty treatments. A ginger tea in the spa lounge is a sensible way to let your legs remember that they belong to you.

Away from the water, you can hike, watch wildlife or book an excursion. Options include Wilson’s Bird of Paradise and Red Bird of Paradise trips, a Batanta waterfall and mangroves trip, an Arefi Village Tour, a Hornbill Island sunset cruise and a sunrise mangrove birdwatching tour. There are no evening shows to schedule your night around, which leaves you free to follow the birds, the weather or your appetite.

Access is part of the stay, not a minor footnote. The resort arranges a paid boat shuttle from Sorong, with the outward boat departing at 14:00. If you arrive in the morning, you are transferred to a partner hotel where breakfast and/or lunch are provided before the boat journey. Arrivals after 12:00 require an overnight stay in Sorong before the following day’s 14:00 transfer.

The return boat leaves the resort at 07:00, so flights from Sorong should be scheduled for 10:30 or later. Earlier flights require a return to Sorong the previous day and an overnight stay there. In other words, allow time for the island to be an island. The property also offers airport shuttle arrangements, private check-in and check-out, luggage storage, concierge assistance, a tour desk, laundry and an on-site infirmary.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 16:00 and check-out from 07:00 to 07:30; your expected arrival time needs to be given in advance. Payment before arrival by bank transfer is required. Wi-Fi is free throughout the resort, and wake-up service is available when the early boat has priority over your sleep.

The resort’s environmental approach is tied to the island rather than reduced to a certificate on the wall. Guides are trained in conservation, waste is sorted for composting and recycling in Sorong where possible, and an incinerator is used for the remainder. Guests are encouraged to reduce plastic waste, bring rechargeable batteries and choose biodegradable toiletries without strong fragrances or antibacterial agents.

Local communities are part of the operating model, with employment and respect for local ways of life, minimum-wage rules and fair-trade practices. Fresh water is available in quantity, while showers use desalinated fresh water. Hot and cold water are available around the clock in each bungalow.

The resort also keeps a few rules close to the surface: fishing from the resort is not allowed, and diving gloves are not permitted. Sensible boundaries, especially in a place where the reef is rather more valuable than another souvenir photograph.
