Ernie's Point, Puerto Galera: Wall and Cave Diving

Ernie's Point is a prominent wall dive located between Monkey Beach and Dungon Wall in Puerto Galera. The dive typically begins with a descent to around 14 metres, where you'll orient south to begin your exploration of the main wall structure. From this initial depth, the reef drops off, creating a vertical topography that extends down to 30 metres, offering a clear profile for planning your dive.

As you follow the wall down, approaching 21 metres, you'll encounter the first of the site's cavelets, nestled at the base of a prominent rocky outcrop. This initial cavity, once home to a large grouper, is often visited by various reef fish and is noticeably rich with sea fan growth. Farther down, at approximately 27 metres, a second, deeper cave provides an additional area for exploration, often requiring a dive light to fully appreciate the marine life within its recesses.

The deeper sections of Ernie's Point, particularly around 25 metres, are marked by large rocky formations that are heavily encrusted with thousands of bright yellow sea cucumbers. This dense covering creates a unique backdrop, distinct from many other reef environments. This depth range, combined with the site's profile, makes Ernie's Point well-suited for nitrox, as it allows for extended bottom times to fully explore the vibrant wall and its resident communities.

Ernie's Point is known for its diverse marine inhabitants, including groupers, mantis shrimp, and various triggerfish patrolling the reef. You'll also encounter angelfish, butterflyfish, and pelagic species like trevally and mackerel, often moving in schools above the wall. Keep an eye out for sea turtles making their way along the reef, adding another dimension to the dive.

Currents at Ernie's Point are strong and significantly affected by tidal shifts, meaning a wall dive can quickly transition into a drift. This variability requires careful planning and a dive with an experienced guide to manage the dynamic conditions. The visibility also fluctuates, ranging from 5 metres to 25 metres, influenced by these same tidal movements and local conditions.

Upon turning the dive and ascending to shallower depths, typically around 14 metres, you'll find a distinct coral forest. This vibrant area provides a stark contrast to the deeper, sea cucumber-covered wall, offering a different set of visual experiences and macro opportunities as you begin your safety stops.
