Kilima Steps, Puerto Galera: Multi-tiered reef exploration

Kilima Steps is a distinct coral reef site in Puerto Galera, characterised by its stepped topography. The reef forms a series of broad, coral-covered terraces that descend from a shallow starting point. This structure creates multiple levels for exploration, allowing you to gradually deepen the dive while remaining oriented along the natural contours of the site. The overall profile of the site makes for a relaxed descent, with ample flat areas at various depths to pause and observe your surroundings.

The shallower sections, starting from around 5 metres, are teeming with tropical reef fish and offer extensive areas of vibrant hard coral growth. As you move deeper, these steps continue, forming wide ledges that provide shelter and feeding grounds for a variety of species. It's a site where you can spend significant time exploring the nooks and crannies of each terrace, observing the intricate ecosystems that thrive there. The natural light filters beautifully through the water, illuminating the various coral structures and their inhabitants.

The resident fauna at Kilima Steps includes thriving populations of Palate surgeonfish (Paracanthurus hepatus) and various nudibranch species, often found crawling across the coral and rubble. You'll also encounter redtooth triggerfish (Odonus niger), anthias, moray eels, stonefish (Synanceia horrida) and scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae) concealed within the reef. Table corals and large sponges are prominent features, contributing to the rich benthic environment.

Beyond the reef structure itself, Kilima Steps holds the potential for pelagic encounters, particularly for thresher sharks (Alopias pelagicus). These encounters typically occur in the deeper blue section, past the final step of the reef. While not a constant presence, early morning dives offer the best chance to spot these sharks as they pass through, turning a relaxed reef dive into something more unpredictable and exhilarating. You might also spot turtles and rays gliding past the reef.

The multi-level nature of Kilima Steps also makes it suitable for photographers, providing diverse compositions from wide-angle reefscapes to macro subjects. The wide terraces allow for easy navigation and stable hovering, which is crucial for capturing detailed shots of the smaller inhabitants. Octopus are also present, often camouflaged among the rocks and corals, adding another layer of discovery to your dive.

While generally considered a mild dive, the deeper areas where thresher sharks might appear extend to 40 metres. This transition from macro-rich reef to the potential for pelagic sightings offers a dynamic profile, balancing the leisurely pace of reef exploration with the anticipation of a blue water encounter. The site's varied topography provides shelter and different micro-environments, contributing to its rich biodiversity.
