The reefs around Koh Tao are home to a vast array of colourful reef fish. You will regularly encounter schools of fish including fusiliers, snapper, and surgeonfish (Acanthuridae). Butterflyfish (Chaetodon), angelfish (Pomacanthidae), and various species of wrasse (Labridae) add constant movement and colour to the coral gardens.

Larger pelagics and predatory fish are a highlight for many divers. It is common to see large schools of barracuda, including great barracudas (Sphyraena barracuda), yellowtail barracudas, and chevron barracudas. You may also encounter bigeye trevallies (Carangidae), cobias, and various types of tuna (Thunnus), alongside reef sharks and blacktip reef sharks (Carcharhinus melanopterus).

On the seabed and within the reef structure, you can find a variety of interesting creatures. This includes turtles, such as the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), as well as blue-spotted stingrays and various species of moray eels (Muraenidae). For macro enthusiasts, the area offers plenty of smaller wonders. You can find nudibranchs, various species of shrimp (Caridea), and interesting molluscs like the Flabellina sea slug. Scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae), frogfish (Antennarius), and various species of pipefish and gobies (Gobiidae) provide excellent subjects for close-up photography.
