Located on the sands of Sairee Beach in Koh Tao, Scuba Shack has been operating as a family-run business since 2014. The centre is positioned directly in front of the O’Chai bungalows, making it easily accessible for those staying on the island's main beach.

As a PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Centre, the shop serves both recreational divers and those looking to enter the professional ranks. They focus on a calm approach to training, ensuring that neither courses nor fun dives are ever rushed.

The team is composed of experienced, multilingual professionals who prioritise safety and individual progress. By maintaining a strict ratio of no more than four divers per guide or instructor, they ensure that every member of the buddy pair receives adequate attention.

Because of its status as an IDC, the centre is a hub for professional development. They host everything from Divemaster internships to Instructor Development Courses (IDC) and Staff Instructor programmes, providing a structured environment for those pursuing a career in diving.

The course catalogue is extensive, covering the entire PADI progression. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving or the Open Water Diver course, while more experienced divers can progress through Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, and Divemaster training.

Professional training is a core focus, with offerings including the IDC, Instructor Internship, and Specialty Instructor programmes. Technical and skill-based specialties are also available, such as Deep Diver, Wreck Diver, Night Diver, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Sidemount Diver, and Self-Reliant Diver.

The centre provides full equipment hire, though you will need to bring your own dive computer. The kit is Scubapro, which is regularly serviced by in-house technicians to ensure everything is in good working order.

For those looking to extend their bottom time or dive more efficiently, Nitrox is available on-site. The shop also offers various PADI specialties to help you refine your skills with specific kit or techniques.

The reefs around Koh Tao are home to a diverse array of larger species. You will frequently encounter various types of barracudas, including chevron barracudas, pickhandle barracudas, and yellowtail barracudas. Turtles, such as the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), are common residents, alongside various species of stingrays and blue-spotted stingrays.

In the open water and around the pinnacles, the chance of seeing pelagics increases. Large schools of jacks (Carangidae) and trevallies move through the area, and divers may encounter the whale shark (Rhincodon typus) or large groupers (Epinephelus itajara).

The reef itself is a vibrant habitat of hard corals (Scleractinia) and soft corals (Alcyonacea), including various gorgonians and sea fans (Gorgoniidae). Among the corals, you can find colourful reef fish such as angelfish (Pomacanthidae), butterflyfish, and various species of snapper (Lutjanus).

For those with an eye for macro life, the area offers plenty of interest. Look closely for nudibranchs, various crustaceans, and octopus (Octopus vulgaris). You may also spot seahorses (Hippocampus kuda), scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae), and various species of anemone fish living within colourful sea anemones (Actiniaria).

The diving season is year-round, though November is the monsoon season when you should expect strong winds, heavy rain, and rougher seas. During the rest of the year, water temperatures generally range between 27°C and 29°C.
