Tech Diving Thailand

Located on the island of Koh Tao, Tech Diving Thailand serves as a dedicated hub for both recreational divers and those pursuing advanced technical disciplines. The centre has been operating since 2011, establishing itself as a specialist training department within the local diving community.

Unlike many large-scale commercial operations, this centre operates with a focus on small, personalised groups. Whether you are training for your first Open Water Diver certification or progressing through advanced technical stages like Trimix or Full Cave, the instruction is tailored to your specific pace and requirements.

The centre is led by David Polley, an experienced instructor with expertise in technical, trimix, cave, and wreck diving. The teaching philosophy prioritises safety and individual progression, moving away from the impersonal nature of large group training.

Instruction is provided through NAUI and ProTec affiliations, offering a non-profit, standards-based approach to education. The team is experienced in handling everything from entry-level recreational divers to highly advanced technical specialists.

The course catalogue is extensive, covering the entire spectrum of diving. For those starting out, they offer NAUI Introduction to Scuba, Open Water Diver, and Advanced Scuba Diver, as well as various ProTec introductory programmes.

Technical training is a core strength, with certifications ranging from Intro to Tech and Sidemount to advanced levels such as Trimix Diver I, Tech 2 Entry Level Trimix, and Rebreather diving. The centre also provides specialised training in cave diving, including the Full Cave Diver package, and wreck diving through advanced technical wreck courses.

Professional development is also available, with courses for Divemaster, Assistant Instructor, and specialized roles such as Gas Blender and O2 Service Technician.

The centre operates a variety of vessels to suit different diving requirements, including multiple recreational and technical boats. For quicker transfers or specific mission requirements, a high-speed RIB is also available alongside their standard hard boats.

On-site facilities include a dedicated gas blending station for Nitrox and Trimix, alongside a specialized workshop for equipment repair and maintenance. This ensures that technical divers have access to the precise gas mixes required for deep or decompression diving.

High-quality rental kit is available for those not travelling with their own gear, featuring brands such as Halcyon, Hollis, and Apeks. This includes a full range of equipment suitable for both recreational and technical profiles.

The waters around Koh Tao are home to a diverse range of pelagics and reef species. You will often encounter large schools of fish, including bigeye trevallies, various snapper species, and barracudas such as the great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda), yellowtail barracuda, and chevron barracudas. Larger predators like the bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas), reef shark (Carcharhinus), and blacktip reef shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus) are also present.

The reef structure itself is a vibrant habitat, featuring hard corals (Scleractinia), soft corals (Alcyonacea), and various sponges (Porifera). These provide a home for many colourful species, including angelfish (Pomacanthidae), butterflyfish (Chaetodon), and various types of wrasse (Labridae). You may also spot turtles, such as the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), navigating the reef.

Macro enthusiasts will find plenty to observe among the corals and crevices. The area is known for various nudibranchs, crustaceans, and octopus (Octopus vulgaris). Look closely for smaller inhabitants like ghost pipefishes, seahorses (Hippocampus kuda), and various species of shrimp and crabs.

Diving in this region involves a variety of environments, from reef flats to deep offshore wrecks. Divers should be prepared for different conditions depending on whether they are exploring shallow reefs or undertaking technical dives on deeper structures.
