Koh Haa Lagoon about the site

Koh Haa Lagoon provides an entry into the dive, positioned between three islands designated as numbers 2, 3, and 4. The lagoon itself presents as a shallow, sheltered plateau, offering a gentle environment. This protected area is ideal for new divers seeking to refine buoyancy or for those looking to practice navigation in calm conditions, with access to a small beach feature within the lagoon.

Beyond the shallow confines of the lagoon mouth, the site opens onto the deeper ocean. Diving around Island 2 on its outer slopes, you will encounter diverse marine life. Look for large marbled grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus), various butterflyfish, and occasional sea turtles. The island itself features a swim-through at shallower depths, which is typically accessible during high tide conditions.

Similar conditions and topography extend to the outer reaches of Island 4. Its walls are home to a concentration of macro life; careful observation reveals nudibranchs (Nudibranchia), cowrie shells (Cypraeidae), and Panica. The transition from the sheltered lagoon to the exposed outer walls provides a gradient of environments, supporting different faunal communities.

Between Island 2 and Island 4, smaller reef sections serve as congregation points for glassfish (Ambassidae), crabs, and various shrimp species. Keep an eye out for ornate ghost pipefish (Solenostomus paradoxus) camouflaged among the soft corals. Lionfish (Pterois) are also regularly sighted in these crevices, often holding their territory.

Dropping deeper along the outer reef, particularly around 32 meters, you will find a vibrant habitat structured by both hard and soft corals. This deeper reef attracts larger pelagic species. Schools of snappers (Lutjanidae) are common here, frequently pursued by crevalle jacks (Caranx hippos) and emperor fish (Lethrinidae). Large giant moray eels (Gymnothorax javanicus) are also resident in the deeper coral heads.

The site is also known for its larger schooling fish. Beyond the lagoon, you may encounter schools of giant batfish (Platax) and barracudas (Sphyraena), often congregating in mid-water or along the reef edges. These aggregations offer a different dynamic to the reef, where these larger species interact within the current.

The lagoon's calm waters provide a contrast to the more open ocean sections. This dual nature allows for varied dive profiles within a single site, from sheltered and shallow explorations to deeper wall and reef dives. Each area supports distinct ecosystems, from the macro inhabitants of the walls to the pelagic schools in the blue water.
