Dune Marseille

Dune Marseille has been a fixture of the local diving scene since 1997, operating from the Port de la Pointe Rouge. As a PADI 5 Star IDC centre with FFESSM affiliation, the centre is well-positioned to handle both recreational exploration and professional instructor training.

The centre serves as a primary gateway to the Parc National des Calanques, an area renowned for its complex limestone topography. You will find a landscape defined by steep walls, sheltered calanques, and various reefs that host a high level of biodiversity.

The diving team is composed of state-qualified instructors (moniteurs diplômés d'État) who manage everything from introductory Discover Scuba Diving sessions to advanced professional training. The centre maintains a strict ratio of one guide per diver, ensuring close supervision and safety on every outing.

As an Instructor Development Centre (IDC), the facility is equipped to train the next generation of professionals, including Divemasters and Instructors. The staff is experienced in managing diverse groups, from those looking for their first breath underwater to seasoned divers seeking technical skill development.

The training programme is extensive, catering to every stage of a diver's progression. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving or the PADI Open Water Diver course, while those looking to advance can pursue the Advanced Open Water Diver certification.

Professional tracks are a core part of the centre's identity. As an IDC centre, they offer pathways through the Divemaster and Instructor levels, as well as the Master Scuba Diver rating. The centre also provides training in breath-hold diving (apnée) and snorkeling.

The centre operates a fleet of five semi-rigid boats, providing reliable transport to the various sites within the Calanques. These vessels are designed to navigate the Mediterranean coastline efficiently, allowing you to reach the deeper reefs and offshore sites.

Depending on the day's itinerary, you might find yourself on a trip to the offshore islands or closer to the sheltered calanques. The fleet is used for a variety of purposes, including wreck diving, reef exploration, and dedicated sessions for snorkeling and breath-hold diving (apnée).

For those travelling without their own kit, the centre offers full equipment hire. This includes the essential components of your rig, such as regulators, BCDs, and wetsuits, as well as fins and masks.

On-shore, the facilities are designed for comfort after a day on the water. You have access to changing rooms and warm showers to rinse off the salt, alongside a dedicated relaxation area with free Wi-Fi to unwind between dives.

The marine life in the Calanques is abundant and varies with the terrain. In the seagrass meadows and around the reefs, you will find schools of fish including sea bream (Sparidae), silver seabreams, and Salema porgy (Sarpa salpa). Wrasses and damselfish (Chromis chromis) are common throughout the shallower areas, while anthias and various species of dentis populate the rocky outcrops.

On the deeper walls and near the limestone structures, look for larger predators and residents such as the common dentex (Dentex dentex), sea bass, and various species of grouper (Epinephelus). You may also encounter moray eels (Muraenidae) hiding in the crevices of the reefs.

Macro life and smaller inhabitants add significant detail to the dives. Keep an eye out for octopus (Octopus vulgaris), spiny lobster (Palinuridae), and various species of scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae). The rocky surfaces are often home to colourful sponges (Porifera), gorgonian sea fans, and red coral, providing a rich backdrop for observing nudibranchs and various crustaceans like squat lobsters and porcelain crabs.

In the open water, there is the possibility of seeing larger pelagics such as dolphins (Delphinidae), whales, or marlins passing through the area.

The diving environment in the Marseille region is shaped by the Mediterranean's seasonal shifts. While the area is accessible throughout much of the year, the specific sites within the National Park can vary in terms of swell and current depending on the weather conditions in the open sea.

Local dive sites range from sheltered calanques to more exposed offshore reefs. Divers should be prepared for different environments, from calm, shallow reef flats to deeper, more exposed walls and wreck sites.
