Passe de Tiputa - Le Bleu: Rangiroa's Pelagic Drift

Diving 'Le Bleu' at Passe de Tiputa with an outgoing current is a distinct experience from typical reef dives. You enter the water approximately 300 metres from the main reef drop-off, immediately immersed in open water. Below your fins, the depth drops to around 250 metres, setting the stage for a true open-ocean encounter from the moment you descend. This initial phase focuses entirely on the pelagic environment, a vast expanse where the ocean's larger inhabitants roam freely.

Your dive plan here involves an initial descent to approximately 15 metres, where you'll hold your depth and wait. This strategic pause in the open blue is designed to maximise your chances of interacting with the resident oceanic sharks that frequent this part of the pass. It's a patient approach, allowing these powerful predators to approach on their own terms, carried by the prevailing currents. This waiting period is central to the 'Le Bleu' experience, offering a unique perspective on these animals in their natural hunting environment.

During this initial 15-minute phase at 15 metres, your attention will be on the open water, scanning for the distinctive forms of the oceanic whitetip shark (Carcharhinus longimanus) and the sleek, powerful silky shark (Carcharhinus falciformis). These apex predators are drawn to the nutrient-rich waters that flush through the pass, making this an ideal location for observation. The gentle current helps position you, providing sweeping views of the surrounding deep blue as these creatures patrol their territory, often circling with curiosity.

After this dedicated open-water encounter, the dive transitions. You'll then begin to move closer to the main reef structure, with the outgoing current gently guiding you. This shift offers a gradual change of scenery, moving from the boundless blue into the vibrant edge of the atoll. This integrated approach ensures you experience both the thrill of pelagic interaction and the later, more structured topography of the reef itself, culminating in a drift similar to the renowned 'Éolienne' dive.

Passe de Tiputa itself is a natural ocean channel, roughly 900 metres long and 400 metres wide, cutting through the atoll rim of Rangiroa. It connects the lagoon with the open Pacific, featuring reef and wall sections that slope from mid-depths into deeper water. This topography, combined with the strong tidal currents, creates a dynamic environment that attracts a wide array of marine life, making it a focal point for large pelagic species.

Beyond the oceanic whitetips and silky sharks, the pass is known for frequent encounters with grey reef sharks (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos), blacktip reef sharks (Carcharhinus melanopterus), and silvertip sharks (Carcharhinus albimarginatus). Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) are also a common sight, often interacting with divers. The strong currents bring in large schools of barracuda and tuna, and occasional sightings of manta rays (Manta birostris), eagle rays (Aetobatus narinari), and even sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) are reported.

The site's reputation as an Important Shark and Ray Area is well-deserved, given its consistent elasmobranch populations. While the focus of 'Le Bleu' is on the open-water pelagics, the drift towards the reef provides opportunities to observe the diverse ecosystem supported by the pass. The interplay of strong currents and rich nutrients creates a thriving environment, ensuring that each dive offers a unique and unpredictable encounter with the ocean's larger inhabitants.
