Ras Ghozlani, Sharm El Sheikh: gentle drift in a coral garden

Ras Ghozlani is a reef and sandy bottom dive site located within the renowned Ras Mohammed area, offering a distinct experience that sets it apart from the more dramatic wall dives of the region. The dive typically begins as a gentle drift, allowing you to cover a significant stretch of reef without effort, observing the intricate ecosystems that flourish here. As you descend, the reef structure quickly reveals itself, characterized by a sloping profile that transitions smoothly into a sandy expanse.

The topography of Ras Ghozlani is defined by its impressive development of coral formations, particularly noted for its superb tabular corals. These broad, plate-like structures provide shelter and hunting grounds for a myriad of smaller reef inhabitants, forming miniature ecosystems under their expansive canopies. Interspersed among these tables are numerous coral pinnacles, rising like natural sculptures from the seafloor, each one a focal point of activity.

Approaching these coral pinnacles, you will encounter dense schools of glassfish (Parapriacanthus ransonneti), their bodies shimmering in the filtered Red Sea light. These small, transparent fish often congregate in such numbers that they create living curtains, swirling around the coral structures. Observing their synchronized movements and how they react to the presence of larger predators provides a constant source of fascination for any diver with an eye for detailed marine behaviour.

The dive unfolds over a sandy bottom that generally sits around 15 metres, providing a clear reference depth for navigation and comfort.
