Las Palmas, Yucatan: Cozumel's gently sloping reef

Diving Las Palmas begins as a second dive, often following a descent into a potentially changing current that guides you along the reef. The site itself is a beautiful, steep slope, beginning at a comfortable 12 metres and gradually transitioning into deeper waters down to 22 metres. As you drift, the reef presents a tapestry of life, decorated with an abundance of sea sponges, scattered small coral heads, and various soft corals that sway with the gentle push of the water, creating a dynamic underwater landscape.

The journey along Las Palmas rewards the keen-eyed diver with a diverse array of marine inhabitants. Turtles (Cheloniidae) are a common sight, gracefully navigating the terrain, often undisturbed by your presence. These bottom-dwellers, unique to the waters around Cozumel, often hide within the reef structure, so a patient and observant approach is key to finding them. With a little luck and sharp eyesight, you may even be rewarded with an encounter with a seahorse (Hippocampus spp.), masterfully camouflaged within the corals.
