Barefoot Dive Center

Located in the Centro district of Cozumel, just a short walk from the main square, Barefoot Dive Center has been a fixture of the local diving community for 11 years. As a PADI 5 Star IDC center, it serves as a hub for both recreational divers and those pursuing professional careers in instruction.

The centre is built around a family-oriented atmosphere, focusing on a personalised approach to every outing. Whether you are heading out to the reef top or travelling to the mainland for cave diving, the emphasis remains on professional standards and inclusive service.

The team at Barefoot is composed of experienced professionals capable of guiding divers through a wide range of environments. They offer instruction in English, Spanish, French, Russian, and Hebrew, ensuring clear communication for an international clientele.

Safety and small group sizes are central to their operation. For Discover Scuba Diving, the ratio is kept to a maximum of two divers per instructor, while for standard courses like Open Water Diver or Rescue Diver, the limit is five divers per guide.

As an IDC center, Barefoot offers a comprehensive catalogue of PADI courses. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving or the Open Water Diver course, with Advanced Open Water Diver and Deep Diver available to expand your experience.

For those looking to refine their skills, the centre provides Peak Performance Buoyancy, Drift Diver, and Enriched Air Nitrox specialties. They also offer Rescue Diver and Emergency O2 Provider training.

The professional pathway is fully supported, with courses ranging from Divemaster and Assistant Instructor through to the Instructor Development Course (IDC) and Specialty Instructor training. They also facilitate the path to becoming an IDC Staff Instructor.

The Big Splash is the centre's dedicated dive boat, designed for comfort and efficiency during long days on the water. The vessel features a spacious deck with ample shading to protect you from the sun between dives.

On board, you will find a bathroom and a freshwater shower to rinse off after your sessions. The boat is well-equipped to handle full-day excursions, providing water, snacks, and lunch to keep you fuelled. Nitrox is available on board for those requiring enriched air for their dives.

The centre maintains a full range of rental kit, including BCDs, regulators, computers, wetsuits, masks, and fins. For those looking to capture their underwater experience, GoPro cameras are also available for hire.

On-site technical support is provided by dedicated technicians who maintain the equipment to high standards. The facility includes areas for rinsing kit and changing, ensuring you are ready for your next outing.

The reefs around Cozumel are teeming with life, from large schools of fish to intricate coral structures. You will regularly encounter Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), and Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) navigating the reef. Large pelagics like Eagle ray (Aetobatus) and various shark species, including Nurse shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum), Reef shark (Carcharhinus), and Blacktip reef shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus), are part of the local ecosystem.

The hard coral architecture is composed of brain corals, elkhorn coral, and various sea rods and sea fans (Gorgoniidae). You will also find an abundance of sponges, including giant sponges and red coral sponges, providing habitat for countless smaller creatures.

For those interested in macro life, the crevices hold many treasures. Look out for the Octopus (Octopus vulgaris), various species of Moray eel (Muraenidae), and the colourful Nudibranch (Chromodoris willani). You may also spot Seahorse (Hippocampus kuda), Spiny lobster (Palinuridae), and various crustaceans like crabs and shrimp.

The best time to visit Cozumel is between November and April, when the weather is typically dry and the sea remains calm. During this period, the diving is highly reliable.
