Sand Dollar Sports

Sand Dollar Sports is a long-established PADI 5 Star dive centre situated directly on the beach in Cozumel. Its location provides immediate access to the local reef systems, making it a practical base for both shore diving and boat expeditions.

As a PADI Eco Center and Green Fins member, the centre is deeply integrated into the local marine environment. They manage an active coral restoration programme, where they cultivate and replant coral fragments, and a portion of their proceeds supports these local conservation efforts.

With more than 40 years of experience in the water, the team prioritises safety and environmental education. The centre is a certified Travelife operator, reflecting a commitment to sustainable tourism practices.

Their approach goes beyond standard recreational diving through their involvement in reef defence and local conservation. Divers can participate in reef restoration tours, gaining a closer look at the efforts being made to protect the Villa Blanca reef from development.

The centre offers a comprehensive range of PADI training, starting from Discover Scuba Diving and Open Water Diver through to advanced levels. For those looking to progress their skills, they provide Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver, and Divemaster courses.

Specialist training is also available, including PADI Nitrox, Deep Diver, and Wreck Diver certifications. The curriculum is designed to cater to all experience levels, from those taking their first breaths underwater to professional-level divers.

The centre provides full rental kit for divers, including regulators, wetsuits, and fins. Nitrox is available for use on dives, providing an option for those looking to extend their bottom time.

On-site facilities include access to purified water and snacks provided during your dives. The centre also maintains a focus on reducing single-use plastics and encourages responsible kit use to protect the local ecosystem.

The reef walls and structures are home to an array of large pelagics and colourful reef fish. You can expect to see hammerhead sharks, Caribbean reef sharks, and nurse sharks patrolling the deeper sections, while eagle rays are a frequent sight, particularly from December to March. Large schools of fish, including jacks (Carangidae), barracuda, and various snappers, move through the water alongside groupers (Epinephelus) and much larger species like the Goliath grouper.

The hard corals and sponges provide the foundation for this ecosystem, with elkhorn coral, brain corals, and giant sponges creating complex habitats. Deep-water gorgonians and sea fans (Gorgoniidae) decorate the walls, alongside various sea rods and sea plums.

For those interested in macro life, the reef offers plenty of smaller treasures. You can find longsnout seahorses (Hippocampus kuda) amongst the corals, as well as various species of octopus (Octopus vulgaris) and moray eels (Muraenidae). Spiny lobsters (Palinuridae) and different types of shrimp inhabit the crevices, while nudibranchs and various species of crabs add detail to the reef floor.

Cozumel is famous for its drift diving, where currents often do the work for you. While many dives are relaxed, certain sites like Santa Rosa Wall and Cantarel are known for having strong, powerful currents that require more experience.

Visibility is generally excellent, typically ranging between 30 and 60 metres. The water remains warm throughout the year, making it a reliable destination for year-round diving.
