Scuba Libre

Scuba Playa is a PADI 5 Star IDC centre located in the heart of Playa del Carmen. Over nearly two decades, the centre has established itself as a specialist in the diverse underwater environments of the Mexican Caribbean, from the open ocean reefs to the intricate cave systems of the Yucatan Peninsula.

The centre's expertise covers a wide spectrum of diving, including reef exploration, drift diving, and guided cenote excursions. Whether you are looking to complete your initial certification or pursue professional levels, the focus remains on technical precision and local environmental knowledge.

The team consists of highly qualified, multilingual instructors capable of conducting courses in both English and Spanish. This ensures clear communication during technical briefings, which is particularly vital when navigating the delicate environments of the cenotes.

Safety is managed through strict diver-to-guide ratios, with a maximum of 4 divers per guide for natural environments and cenote dives. For more advanced training courses, the ratio may increase to between 4 and 6 divers per instructor.

Beyond instruction, the centre is actively involved in marine conservation, collaborating with 'Saving Our Sharks' to support the protection of bull sharks.

Scuba Playa provides a comprehensive catalogue of PADI courses, ranging from the Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver to the Rescue Diver and Divemaster levels. They also offer the Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT) programme for those pursuing a professional career.

Specialised training is available to refine specific skills, including PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy, Deep Diver, Wreck Diver, and Drift Diver courses. For those interested in the technical or scientific side of the sport, they offer Digital Underwater Photography, Fish I.D., and Underwater Naturalist certifications, as well as Search and Recovery training.

The centre offers a full range of professional equipment for hire, suitable for both reef and cave diving. This includes regulators, BCDs, wetsuits, fins, and torches for night dives.

Nitrox is available for divers looking to extend their bottom time on reef or cenote excursions. For those heading into the cenotes, the centre provides box lunches to ensure you are well-fed for the day's adventures.

The reefs are home to a vast array of colourful life, including many species of tropical fish such as Angelfish (Pomacanthidae), Butterflyfish (Chaetodon), and various Parrotfish (Calotomus). You will often see schools of grunts, Snapper (Lutjanus), and several types of ray (Batoidea). Large pelagics like Eagle ray (Aetobatus) and even seasonal Bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas) can be encountered in the area.

In the sandy areas and reef crevices, look for Spiny lobster (Palinuridae), various crustaceans, and Moray eel (Muraenidae). You may also spot sea turtles (Cheloniidae), including Green turtle and loggerhead turtles, navigating the reef top.

For macro enthusiasts, the environment offers plenty of detail, from Nudibranch (Chromodoris willani) and Seahorse (Hippocampus kuda) to various species of shrimp (Caridea) and Octopus (Octopus vulgaris). Small wonders like sexy shrimp and colorful sponges (Porifera) add texture to the underwater landscape.

The scenery is defined by a rich tapestry of hard coral (Scleractinia), soft coral (Alcyonacea), and various gorgonians, which provide the structural foundation for the local ecosystem.

Ocean diving in the area typically experiences moderate to low currents, while the cenote environments are characterized by still water. This makes the cenotes an excellent choice for those working on buoyancy control.

Seasonal shifts affect the local marine life, with Bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas) sightings most likely between November and March.
